Wondering if someone could help me troubleshoot my Metr Pro Can module

I have the module connected to a focbox 1.7 with verified working CAN connection
Focbox is on FW 5.1
Metr is on FW 5.35

Can cable is connected as follows:
5V - 5V
Gnd - Gnd
CanL - CanL
CanH - CanH

I can connect to the metr from the metr app, it shows BLE encrypted.
I can see the Metr in the VESC tool when scanning.

The issue:
I am unable to connect to the metr using VESC tool, the connection is made, and after this vesc tool gives the error “Could not read firmware version”

Metr app shows Metr is connected, but ESC not connected

Troubleshooting so far:
Changed vesc ID (default 33, tried 56, 78, 102), issue persists

Tried to change can baud rate (125K, 250K, 500K, 1M), issue persists

Blue led and green is blinking on metr pro can (blue approx 4x faster than green)
Red led is off

Help or suggestions much appreciated

Blinking green means CAN connection can not be established. Solid green means CAN is OK. Do you have another VESC to try with?

I have a second focbox here but it’s currently on FW 3.103
Will it work with that or do I need to flash it to something newer?

for reference the focboxes have been working with CAN when they were both on 3.103

FW 3.103 should work too!

Why did you mention this? Did you have to modify the cable?

same behavior with the second focbox

I got the metr second hand and had to swap CanL and CanH for it to match the pinout on the focbox

Ok, this will probably surprise you, FOCBOX has wrong labels. Please swap CAN L and CAN H to their original positions and try again.

Oh FFS potter :persevere:
I’ll swap them just a sec

EDIT: It’s working, Green is ON, blue is blinking, J-Po is a dumdum

Thanks for the help @rpasichnyk

Hey @rpasichnyk , I’m having issues with the location tracking on my metr pro unity.
It seems to only work when the (android) phone is unlocked and google maps is using gps.

Per the troubleshooting, I’ve double checked my settings:

Notifications:

Permissions:

Metr Records:

As you can see from yesterday’s record - metr seems to have only caught location tracking a couple times when I opened my phone and checked.

My lockscreen does not show the full metr details. Only the same logo as on the top bar. I can try adjusting that setting.

Any help would be appreciated!

Just to be sure, this happened to me last year and it was fixed in a new version. Is your application updated?

Check battery optimisation section in android system settings, make sure Metr app is excluded (do not optimise battery).

I checked all the settings again, but there was really nothing to change. I did adjust the lock screen to display full information, per the screenshot in the troubleshooting section… and now it works!
Full gps.

Odd that that’s what needed to change, but I’m not complaining. Just have to get used to seeing full text messages on the lock screen. It would be great if that wasn’t required.

If you tap the consumption number you get two different values. I assume that’s each motor?

No, that’s with/without regen.

Hey, just checking in for tips on what metr to purchase for my dual fsesc6.6 for compatibility etc. Anyone with good experience running metr on their fsesc?

Right now I have the flipsky bluetooth module in my UART port so I guess I have to switch that out for the metr (or is there a way to hook up the can version that I’ve missed?). Excited to effortlessly limit my board to avoid confiscation in case I ever get stopped.
Cheers, D

You can’t go wrong with Metr CAN. It doesn’t use up any ports.

That would be preferable but I’m inexperienced with CAN. Looking at the diagram for my ESC, there is no marked CAN port as on other fsescs. Am I missing something?

Unfortunately CAN pins are not easily accessible (it is possible to solder wires to the pins in the red circle however). Or you can use regular Metr Pro that will take UART port.
