The battery builders club

I assume so…balance charging usually happens when a certain set of criteria are met with regard to pack and cell voltage, so I can only imagine if those criteria are met before and after the unplug/replug, it’d continue as it was.

I could be wrong though…but I no longer leave PEVs plugged in overnight or when I’m not home.

Have you had a bad experience?

No, but no electronic system is perfect. However amazing something may be built, they’re built from inherently imperfect things. A phone is one thing, but a large battery with a kilowatt of energy going off in a home housing a family and children isn’t something I’m willing to risk at all if possible. Charging is one the most dangerous states a battery can be in, and so I only do so when I’m around to supervise.

Is anything likely to happen on a well made battery? No, not likely. But nothing’s perfect so I don’t do that anymore.

I really think we should normalize storing PEV batteries inside steel or at least solid wood boxes.

idk maybe a bag solution is more workable/marketable/scalable commercially.

I think that could be a good business selling those kind of bags.

something like a dog crate plus the fire resistant bag makes sense to me. room for two super heavy mtb in the bottom and maybe 2 boards above. then rack for other boards above that. hell maybe if it was secure/dry leave it outside depending on your property.

I was thinking something like those bags they make for lipo but bigger. It would have to look nicer tho to be able to brand them and charge more.

Rather then store the entire board in a metal crate while charging, it may be easier to design batteries to be removable. At least with top mount boxes, we’re not far from that now.

Normalize removing batteries for charging (and put them into a fire safe bag and/or metal cabinet)

Even lower cost of failure. Don’t risk your board or your house.

The real solution is a garage for your boards + an IOT garage door opener in case of fire lol

Or have a camera pointed at where you charge your boards. This is how I keep an eye on them

Metal wall locker in the garage with no other boards in it while charging with a 120v smoke alarm inside that is hard wired in series to the other alarms inside the house.

I have too many boards in my shop to do this

50k worth of insurance and concrete floors are my peace of mind

What’s the fire plan with that setup?

See something smoking, open the door, toss the board into the open air?

Basically just toss it across the river to NYC. No one would notice an extra dumpster fire around here. :flushed:

They gotta sell like a thermal camera version of that, alerts when something is up.

I don’t know I you have time to open the door, battery fire happen really fast.

I would either leave it somewhere were it is safe for you and your stuff or inside a fireproof container/bag.

I plan to keep some sand around to cover the flames.

Lasso it and drag it out the door

That surveillance camera definitely has to be on when that happens.
