True solid-state large pouch and prismatic EV cells in pilot production by 2027 at mind-boggingly high prices. Most companies in full production of the large EV cells by 2030. Maybe samples of smaller cells by then.

Round cells? Maybe never but there’s a chance that polymer-based solid-electrolyte (true solid-state) round cells could rolled up and eventually be around in a few years…at crazy high prices.

Thnx for the answer Battery Mooch! Even the semi solid state batteries are very impressive, can’t wait for the real thing! Do you know if the donut lab battery is true solid state? It is the talk of the town and they have some wild claims like 100000 cycle life?

It is indeed true solid state…but it’s not a battery, it’s a capacitor. :slightly_smiling_face:

Okay, yea, the popular usage of ā€œbatteryā€ for anything that can store energy means it is considered by many to be a battery. But it’s a cap. And what better way for Donut Lab to hide what those packs actually are? :joy:

I had two more detailed posts about this for my Patreon supporters but check out Ziroth’s video on YouTube…I agree with his analysis that it’s a cap made via Nordic Nano’s (their partner) solid-state printing process.

If my understanding of battery chemistry basics is to be trusted, this basically confirms it? Can’t have a decent battery without rare earths/alkaline metals

LFP and Na-Ion cells don’t have the peskier ingredients though and are a great fit for lower cost EV’s and BESS’. Not what we’re looking for but those are markets 10,000 times larger. :slightly_smiling_face:

The cycle life claim is what screamed cap to me. It would have been corporate suicide to make that spec up so I figured cap. I had no idea though that someone had gone far enough to make solid-state caps with that energy density at a high enough yield to be profitable.

That’s what I’m thinking, if it’s got sufficient capacity then whether it’s a battery or a cap is a distinction without a difference?

I think cap’s discharge voltage being a constant line going down doesn’t work well with a vehicle

Maybe they’ve advanced a lot but their energy density wasn’t close either

Battery stores energy in chemical reactions
Capacitor stores energy with electric charge.

Also notable is capacitors have a linear voltage discharge curve. They dont output a (roughly) consistent voltage like batteries do

Other things can come into play though…

  • Can they be discharged to zero volts so HazMat shipping isn’t required?

  • What domestic and international regulations need to be considered?

  • What are the assembly line cost differences? What does it take to dive into that business versus making li-ion cells?

  • Temperature tolerance (for performance) seems to be much better than li-ion cells?

  • What are the degradation mechanisms for solid-state caps?

  • Is disposal as easy as discharging a Donut Lab pack to zero volts and just recycling as normal waste? Or will it be HazMat?

  • What has to be done differently by first responders when a Donut Lab vehicle has crashed?

Don’t all batteries that don’t have lithium have a linear discharge curve? I’m thinking Alkalines, Lead Acid, NiMH, etc. That’s just a slightly different energy management algorithm. Plus if they really are caps then you can’t over discharge them so all that BMS noise goes away.

Great points! Am I remembering correctly that some voltage-regulating electronics were mentioned in the Donut Lab video? Even if not, you’re right, they’ll probably be needed.
