Summerboard SBX V1 reviews, discussion, mods, deals, problems, mostly problems. Maintenance/upgrade guides.

From a engineering standpoint a all wheel drive system would be dope AF! :sunglasses: I’m sure it will be possible however you’ll be overcomplicating things… my angle is to have a high power twin drive system for easy hill-climbing for a big dude like me. My stock SBX and carbon lowrider are both not up for the task… melow incline they do but anything more and it’s KO.

I never posted it in this thread, but it was around this time, call it Jan 2023 the ā€œv2 sbxā€ Caster bases and upgraded silver U-brackets became available.

About 1.5 years after that improvement they are releasing what I would guess could be called the V3 Summerboard (SR360? or new name?) Caster modules

Time will tell on how much longer this new module lasts before needing service, and what that service will look like compared to all the other versions with resoldering brush tips, greasing, cleaning dirt etc…

I have the V1 and V2 caster. The V1 caster has the black bolt on u-bracket. That’s the one I build the SB-XL kit for. The V2 caster is the press-fit bolt and the silver stainless steel u-bracket. Think we could name the newest the V3

I think the V3 has a much better slipring. If I have to speculate it might need maintenance once every 2 year. The bearings in between are axial needle roller bearings, you can look in between the rollers so it will collect dust and brime. Think that will be the week point for the new SBX. But who knows… I’m only guessing.

In general … the V2 MOBO still is open on the underside… I think their next job should be to make a full enclosure. I don’t think most people would use their SBX in the rain much (feels like riding on ice), however you always can get caught by a rain shower.

Their V2 Mobo is doing much better than there V1 mobo but still since I keep a hawk-like watch on issue reports I know of 6-10 V2 mobos that are broken out of the hundreds riding right now.

I’m curious if anyone knows what prevents a v1 ESC from working with a v2 battery. I asked someone with a SBX2 to check their FW and it reports back as the same firmware & HW target as a v1 ESC. So the v2 ESC thinks it’s talking to a BQ78350 over a UART.

Looking at this v2 battery above the BMS speaks CAN bus, you can see the CAN-H/L silkscreen. It looks like there still the 4x communication wires from the ESC to the Battery (GND, UART TX, UART RX, ON_L). So it seems likely the battery has some microcontroller translating between the ESC’s UART/BQ78350 to the v2 BMS’s CANBus.

Other than the TVS diodes were there more ESC issues that I’m forgetting?

Looking at the SBX2 is the castor really secured by a single bolt through the board? Or do those 4x bolts from the bottom go into recessed bolts on the bottom of the deck?

Yeah it is, you think there is a safety issue?.. seems that the four other bolts are there to keep the plastic base in place.

I don’t know if it’s a safety issue or not, but it’s an interesting change.
I’m certainly curious to see how the SBX2 base and castors are assembled and secured.

I wonder what prevents the plastic base closest to deck from rotating.

I see your point, if the extra caster base screws just attached to the lower plastic that would not be good. there must be some way those 4 screws attach into the deck itself I would guess. Or maybe there is a CNC feature on the deck that indexes the caster module on. So the entire module removes with the single screw… but I doubt that I think just the moving part of the module would come off.

No way to be sure yet. I could ask them if they have any maintenance guide videos in the works.

Someone should abduct a SBX2 and dissect it to answer all our questions! :alien:

Hey leen can you help me out with a project I have been working on SpeedDemon has told me that you have a homemade caster can you guide me in the steps of making I am trying to make a board with no summerboard products possibly going to try and make it all with a 3d printed material.
