Stripped screw on gear drive

Hiya guys and gals – Happy New Year 2023!

I could use some advice on dealing with a stripped screw. I cannot get this 2.5mm hex screw out. I used Loctite 245 on it as suggested. I got 2 out, but stripped the third one :frowning:

What are good ways for me to deal with this?

Thank you very much!

You can either use a dremel disk to cut a slot in the screw and use a flat screw driver

Or use a screw extractor

I had a similar problem a while ago. I grabbed a hex key that was one size larger, and hammered it in. Essentially forcing it into the hole. From this I was able to slowly unscrew, while applying lots of downward force to maximise the friction.
It worked for me, but it can also make a problem worse. As the user above mentioned, dremel is best.

If OP goes this route, he needs to make sure the slot is DEEP and make sure to heat it up with a blow torch thoroughly

Screw extractor is your best friend!

Try a torx a bit bigger and hammer it.Otherwise cut a slot.

Try this first while using heat. I’ve done this many times.

Heats a good idea. Didn’t know how well this loctite works.

+1 for hammering in a slightly oversized torx bit. Saved my ass heaps of times

I’d first try a slightly larger hex bit. Could even use an over sized but slightly damaged torx (the star shaped ones) bit and make sure to push down more than you rotate it. If you can get a slot in it without damaging anything else then that would be the second choice.

Otherwise, get a small screw extractor from a local hardware store. I’ve had the best luck using the versions that have a drill a hole into the bolt first and then you go in with the extractor. On the hex bolts I used it on I did need to drill further in than you would normally do since the hex slot is so big.

If that doesn’t work, slowly drilling it out with a size above the bit that came in the extractor kit works well. I didn’t end up messing up any internal threading when drilling out bolts that were truly stuck. But if you do mess up, then there are plenty of cheap sets of metric threading rod things available on Amazon

Hey, had the exact same issue with the same screws. Only thing that worked for me was dremeling a slot for a flathead. You just need a cheap metal cutting disc.

In my case, the screws were loctited in so it was really tough to get them to release with a torx bit or any other method.
