Some New FOCers (84V VESC 6 based controllers)

Yeah I figured that, looking forward to buying a Serious FOCer no matter the price tag, since there’s absolutely nothing vesc based out there that reliably runs 20S with good power for ebikes!

All the ES guys are using black boxes or Nucular series controllers which don’t have the same customization as a vesc, but they are (more importantly) reliable at the power levels they are running.

I’m really not sure how much the skateboard market needs HV yet, but the ebike, efoil, jetsurf market absolutely needs this!

Yeah man I get it. I know 20S is needed and that’s Why I’m doing what I’m doing. I also spec my stuff conservatively. More so than I originally thought when a tester pushed a little FOCer to 120A(not advised) and all it did was heat up that much quicker. I thought sparks would fly for sure

esk8 needs motors that can reliably handle 20S before it can get ESCs that can reliably deliver it.

Nobody wants to run 90KV maytech style motors. Trust me. I have a drawer full of them. We need 170 and 190 at least that can somehow handle it without smoking.

And there we have yet another need in the market. Another opportunity for someone to help take esk8 to the next level. Curious though as to why low kV outrunners don’t hold up. Seems the most direct way to trade off voltage for low end torque in esk8 architecture

90 kv holds up fine. Anything past that is questionable, but even at those voltages we aren’t getting the speeds we want once reduction is in place. So it makes anything past 14S dumb to even think about from a reliability standpoint. Some people are running 16S but i seriously question the longevity of that. Most motors are spec rated at 14. I’m planning to try out 14S on my flux this coming year at some point since I have a UBOX in it, but it might be a while since i already have almost 1500 watt hours of brand new pack in there at 12S

Ah I see. From what I can tell, the motor’s only real voltage limitation is the insulation rating of the windings and such. Other than that, the consequential increase in rpm from high voltage of course puts more mechanical stress on things. But this is just me conducting armchair engineering. Could be different irl.

Still though, you don’t have to do 20S with my FOCer. Running 14S on it would be well under the max and you can ride worry free.

I’m mostly interested in higher series counts because it means faster charging at higher currents.

Could mean either custom made by them or (more than likely) by another factory.

Seriously though, how large are the bearings? The little tiny balls I feel like those wear out faster than the larger balls.

I’d love to talk to these people… I’ve been dying for a viable Onewheel alternative or DIY that can run the 15S setup and respond smoothly.

@TheBoardGarage do you have a build you are messing with currently? or like a OW frame ready for a drop-in VESC swap.

I’ve ordered the Floatwheel, have a OW Plus in pieces that I’m working on, to put the 14s2p extended pack in, and will at some point just buy a new XR to gut and try grafting a FOCer controller in, replacing the Future Motion controller and battery.

Been digging deeper into OW DIY, as there’s a limited space for repair with Onewheels. Either you send them to Future Motion, or pay increasingly ridiculous prices for used components. BMSs and controllers on the aftermarket are currently $500 because people demand it and others pay for it. Future Motion locks down the board more each iteration.

I think that DIY parts that can either make a full Onewheel or replace the controller in an FM Onewheel are what are really needed to tame the craziness that’s going on in the aftermarket world.

I’ve got a OW centric YouTube channel, so it’s a big hobby for me. And this year I’ve been building batteries and eskates as a more hands on hobby. I’m hoping those worlds can come together, and the community can have viable options to branch out.

@TheBoardGarage hello! What a nice surprise to see you here. I’m in the same boat (after ditching my plans with the Pint, as I don’t think I can reasonably fit battery cells in two layers in there and that’s my requirement for capacity). Now I’m also planning to get an XR, my master plan entails getting one on black friday, sell the controller and battery box for a ridiculous price and replace them with my own.

In fact I was just popping in here to ask if some of the beta testers already have some real-world riding results to share. Mainly how well it rides (VESC config variables can be shared later) - how it’s handling terrain (rocks, bumps), high torque control, doing drops and if possible, stuff like curb nudges and bonks :slight_smile: (if anyone is doing that on a DIY onewheel!) I am more or less decided to pull the trigger, but still would welcome more information if it’s out there already…
