Skyart Battery Questions

Hey Guys,

I bought a skyart battery to use in a build and I actually dont really know what I am doing.

So it is an 18s5p pack and I have a couple questions:

1.) How do I access the BMS to check on the health of the cells?

2.) How do I charge it? I am assuming through the xt-90 cable? I bought a 72v charger but then I remembered the nominal voltage isnt exactly 72… can I still use this charger?

  1. For Android. Overkill Solar is what I use.
  2. Post a picture of the battery. Usually XT-90 is the discharge and XT-60 is the charge connector. You can use 72v charger, but you’d still need a 75.6v charger to fully charge the battery.

“nominal voltage” is voltage in name only. manufacturers of batteries and chargers say various things. often they use 3.7v or 3.6 per cell for standard lion cell where max voltage is 4.2v per cell.

if your 72v on your charge is the “nominal voltage”. it might be for a 20s battery ( 72v/3.6v = 20s ) and then not be safe to charge your 18s battery. the bms should kick in to protect though.

best to measure the voltage on the charger before using it. should be close to 4.2*18 = 75.6

using a lower voltage charger will charge up to that voltage, but it might not trigger the bms balancing depending on bms settings. but you can get away without for a while. a good battery doesn’t fall out of balance very fast. and a bad battery isn’t saved by constant balancing.

There is a chance your ‘72V charger’ is actually 75.6 volts as well.

Really got to put a voltmeter on the business end and double check.

You guys are so helpful thanks so much

Sorry I don’t have an android and also I still don’t understand how it connects? Is it Bluetooth?

Yes, bluetooth connection is the BMS used is a bluetooth one (Skyart usually uses these but no guarantee). Scan for bluetooth and see if your BMS pops up.

We’re here for you Dan!

Looks like thse guys got you sorted out, if you have any questions about your battery feel free to DM me too

If you have iOS you can also download XiaoxiangBMS app to connect to the BMS and check voltage levels via Bluetooth also.
