Significantly lower than expected range?

I recently finished my AT Skateboard build and am getting significantly lower range that I calculated. I am using 2 6s 10,000mah LiPos in series and expected to get about 24 miles of range according to esk8 calc but instead am getting 10-12 without riding particularly hard.

Specs:
12s 10,000mah LiPo battery (10c continuous discharge)
2x 6374 190kv Dickyho motors (with sensors)
Dickyho pneumatic all-terrain kit (6x2 F0 wheels, 15t motor gear, 60t drive gear) - inflated to 35 PSI
Flipsky VESC 6.6 running in FOC mode

Does anyone know why? What can I do to increase the range? Thanks!

try 50. how much did you weigh?

Good idea, i’ll pump up the pressure. I weigh 165 LBS

Is it multi-star high caps? I used the same ones for my board. I could usually get around 17-20 km out of them.

I think it’s because they have a lot of voltage sag under load.

They are multistar batteries! That sucks!

Definitely check the rest of the board though to make sure that things aren’t too tight and causing parasitic losses (ie. In the drivetrain).

Multistars are made mostly for large drones rather than heavy skateboards. You would typically buy them for drone endurance like hovering, instead of high performance flying. The large current draws of skateboards isn’t really their forté I guess

I get about 14 mi from 2 6S 12000mAh in series on my pneumatic off-road board so it sounds about right to me.

Try increasing to 60 PSI.

Also for the esk8 calc, did you change your Wh/M consumption?

Range for thane vs neumatic is roughly half. The esk8 calc defaults to thane. For AT and peumies, your Wh/M consumption should be around 20-24 vs 10-12 for thane

Yeah, this doesn’t seem to far off. You were looking for thane efficiency and you’re getting pneumatic efficiency. My 12S 10ah 50C lipo pack lasts me between 8-12mi on 6" aliexpress tires, depending on how much of the 160A battery max I use. I’m starting cut-off at 3.6V and hard cut-off is at 3.5. Don’t feel any sag at all before cut-off.

12x10x3.7=444 wh
444wh x 85% = 377.4wh
377.4wh/12 - 10 miles=
31.45 wh/mi - 37 wh/mi

Numbers seem about right. You could increase tire air pressure or lower cutoff voltage. Won’t get you to 24miles. You need double the battery capacity or switch to Urethane

Ive had a 6s 10000 mah multistar lipo aswell, range wasnt great even on a single motor… After a few months they started to sag pretty significant too and the internal resistance of the cells kept increasing so I stopped using it. Hope you have better luck with them though!

You won’t believe how much tire pressure affects the range of a board, I get around 12 miles on 20psi and 20 miles on 50psi.

I had 20psi after I forgot to check my pressure for more than 1 month

Are those numbers per motor or for 2 motors combined?

Those are per motor.

You do bring up another good point, if you have 2 motors, you need to half your battery pack
