Sure what’s your problem?

More heat, much flux

I use solder with a flux core (I think) and I have a 50watt iron but whenever I actually try it the wire just doesn’t bond to the xt90 and I just have bits of wire with solder stuck onto them

Both are tinned?
Get some solder on the tip and have a dump sponge on hand to clean it. Then get some solder on the tip again and let it heat up and if you hear cracking sounds, oress it in and let it cool then.

Get a hotter iron and some flux paste or a flux pen

20€ and gets the job done. 60W.

Can you help me with tinning the wire as I am really bad at that

Also what do you mean by oress it?

Flux really helps dude, not just flux cored solder.

And heat. If your solder isn’t getting sucked into the wire, you don’t have enough heat

My solder has always too much flux in the flux core. :joy:

For the moment I have no flux so what is the best way to do it

Also can you give some tips on tinning

  1. Get the shit really fucking hot

  2. Put solder on it

  3. Keep it hot til the solder soaks in

It helps to move the iron around a bit to distribute the heat more evenly.

Your problem sounds like a case of cold soldering.

Sounds like the xt90 connector is not hot. You need to have the solder hot and keep it hot till the xt90 connecter is also hot so it both bonds, maybe keep it melted for about 8 to 10 seconds ( also flux your xt90 ).

Best way is to plug the connecter in the opposing xt90 sex to prevent the pin from moving due to a bit of heat and solder it on.

If you still not sure, have a look at this vid.

benefits? how do they help?

At the moment the only thing I use to help things in place is this:

But orings instead of rubber bands

They are nice and small so they do the same thing in tighter environment.

And getting a good clamp stops the solder from wicking up the braid or wire.

And you don’t have to fuck around with a rubber band. Quick on, quick off.

Probably gives more pressure than a rubber band too

Yeah so my solder iron doesn’t get hot enough that I can touch the prongs and heat up the metal enough to melt solder on it

Guess I will have to look into getting a better solder iron

Does your solder have temp reading or is it just an on and off type?

Just to be clear, I did not mean keep the solder on the prong and then get the prong hot enough to melt the soldering tin. I mean solder the soldering tin into the prong and keep the solder melted in the prong by keeping your solder in the melted soldering tin for about 10 seconds.

Heating up the prong hot enough to melt the soldering will just melt the plastic xt90 casing

The melted soldering will heat up the prong

My flux of choice is rosin flux paste

Pre-prepared XT-90s I do up before putting them away for storage when I have extras, you can see how much I put in.

@Halbj613 just tell me what you want to solder and I’ll do it for you

You could also just have cheap shitty solder.

Shit solder takes a lot more heat to get it to bond or wick.
