I don’t think the intention was some long con. I think someone saw opportunity to make $$ with Enertion going tits up.
This is purely speculation/my opinion, but I think JeffWu (and potentially Jed, to whatever level of involvement) got a hold of the gerbers, as those things tend to get passed around when a company stops paying their factories. This is super common practice tbh, happens even actively while you’re manufacturing product. Given that zero modifications were made, it’s a fair guess this was a copy-paste/clone based on some leaked gerbers.
I think the 'we build EVs, this is for hobby funtimes!" was just a big dog & pony tho.
The heatsink/enclosure design is amateur & low-effort at best.
