Rookie Lipo battery question

Dear experts,
I have two Nanotech 10S 4Ah Lipo batteries. They have two JST-XH balance plugs (6 cables each). That much I understand.
Then, they have four bigger cables, labelled : Main+, main-, serial+, serial-

If I try to measure a voltage across main+, main- … I get nothing. Same when I try to test for continuity between the common pin between the two balance plugs.

My understanding is that :

  • the two 5S groups are completely independant
  • I need to connect serial- and serial+ to get the 10S across the main leads.

I’d like to ask for confirmation before I blow my kitchen

to get you full 36v nominal hook the - from one side and hook it to the positive of the other side . use a multimeter to make sure of your wires. the should be no spark or anything when connecting them. im assuming that the serial - and + are the correct wires to connect but id just use a meter to be sure first.

if the 2 short heavy gauge wires are serial - and serial + you can probably bet your correct on connecting them. if you don’t have a meter take just 1 or a couple of the wire fibers from one of them and slowly touch them to the other one and just be prepared for it to spark if for some reason they are from the same side so you dont jump.

Thank you ! That idea to short it with a thin strain of wire is excellent.
I could also short it with a low current fuse.
I will try that !!

“Shorting the wire but just a lil bit” is… unnecessarily risky, I’d say. If this pack works the way you think it does, measure the voltage between B- to S, and then the other S to B+. Each should be a normal 5s voltage. Then measure the 2 serial wires, there should be no voltage or continuity between them. If so, they’re safe to connect.

If you don’t have a multimeter, STOP and get one before doing anything else. That is required prerequisite equipment for working with dangerous batteries.

I did exacly that … and got the result you describe.
But still … I will first connect the two serial with a fuse.

I do,don’t worry. I know quite a bit in electronics … just not much in the way the batteries are wired.

:+1: I was more addressing the comment from the other person, to make sure other folks reading this thread don’t think it’s safe to do this work without one.

Thank you all !!
I connected the two serial and it’s all fine.

I’ve storage charged my first 10S pack with my icharger 1010B+. It went fine … except that I’m a bit disappointed with the final balance (I have min 3.79 max 3.85). I don’t know if I should expect better.

The problem arrived when I tried to storage charge the second Lipo. I started by connecting the balance connector (did a monitor … all cell voltages were fine). Then I went by connecting lead neagtive. But when I tried to connect the lead positive, I got a spark when I touched the charger banana … and I stop and disconnected everything.
Is it normal to get a spark when connecting the lead cables to the charger ? I know I shoud have started with the positive rather than the negative … but I’m a bit freaked out now. I think I have some XT90X at home to get an antispark between the battery and the icharger.
