Rack and workspace for diy builders!

Hello diy builders!

Please help me with my university research by answering my questions.*
I’m designing a rack with a table, and I need your help with it.*

  • What common problems do you encounter when building, assembling, and maintaining an electric skateboard?
  • What types of storage solutions have proven to be the most effective for creating a well-organized workspace with a small footprint?
  • What do you find lacking in your current equipment? What is absolutely necessary and indispensable?
  • If you have a rack, what kind is it, or what kind would you build?
  • How many boards do you have?
  • How large of a workspace or table do you need when doing DIY builds?

Manipulation of the board has been a consistent annoyance for me. Stuff like flipping the board over multiple times during a build, holding the enclosure onto the deck temporarily while figuring out details like cable lengths.

Wire rack shelving is good, so are pegboards with 3d printed bins. Harbor freight sells bins that are great for organizing connectors and hardware.

1.Quick and easily accessible tools that are always ready to use.
2. The ability to make any wiring harness you could possibly need. This includes all the gauges of wires you may need. Also a good soldering setup and crimpers for jst ph

I had this, it was ok

You don’t need any space. The only time you need to have proper clean space is if you’re building a battery.

Nice, love real world assessment! Make sure you claim credit for engaging directly with actual users rather than one way top down design research.

I use an old crt tv video stand (chest high bench with smaller shelf below- lower shelf handy to keep things in arms’ reach) as a small footprint workstation. trucks overhang, sometimes useful, other times not. Whole setup on lockable wheels, definitely useful. both shelves and wheel frame can also be used as a board rack - handy.

Wacky ideas for someone else’s workstation project:

  • lockable lazy Susan raised platform to spin board
  • integrated suction and small bore duct for soldering/fumes/etc
  • magnetic holders for parts, fixings, tools, driver bits, etc in useful places
  • device holder for watching how to vids and reading forum insights while doing work
  • floor protection
  • ai integration that suggests using existing parts before buying more

Love to see your final design!

I found a lazy susan very handy with a short kicktail.

I also cover bricks in cardboard and cheap masking tape to act as a bit of an elevation rack.

Thanks for the help, guys. I’ve gained a lot of insight into the DIY world based on your responses. I’ll keep sharing the progress of the project, and feel free to jump in with any additional suggestions or ideas.

P.S. The project might only get to the mock-up stage since I only have six months to complete it, and I’m not sure I’ll have enough time, especially if I add electronics. Plus, I’m juggling several projects at once. But I’ll do my best!
