Question about Trampa’s Phatlads width.

I’ve ordered Trampa’s Phatlads and was expecting a totally different width. I was expecting a much wider hub.
From Trampa’s website it states that this Rim is 2.5" which is 63mm right ?
The measurements are way off.
I’ve tried to fit a Qind Da 200x50 tire and it leaves a huge space between the 2 parts of the rim.

What did I miss here ?

That’s because it’s a stepped rim meant for 4" diameter tires. These rims would much rather be on 4in diameter tires as they wouldn’t do this. Mbs R2 pro XL have the same problem

Thanks ! Sorry, I’m not familiar with the terms :frowning: , stepped rim ?
Stating a 2.5" Rim width , doesn’t mean that this is the width of the rim  ? By 4" diameter tire, you mean the diameter of the “hole” of the tire ?

Yeah. You see how before the edge of the rim, the diameter increases? That’s the lip for 4" tires, meaning the actual width for 3.75" (regular 8" and below tires like yours) sit on the narrower part of the rim, creating a gap like that.

Oh,
I wasn’t talking about that. I am talking about the gap between the 2 parts of the RIM itself connecting from the both ends of the tire.
They do not close and there is a large space between them (inside in between the parts of the hub).
In order to connect between them I need to really press hard and squeeze the tire for both ends to meet.
That what I was referring to. I.e the total RIM width is too narrow to fit this tire.

Yeah, that’s a result of the much smaller effective diameter for 3.75" tires due to the step. Say this tire had a 4" inner diameter, you wouldn’t have much of an issue here. Nothing you can really do here, but if it’s any consolation, those tires absolutely suck and are very prone to flats. I ran them for years and gave up on them do to their interior texture ripping tubes apart

Oh, got you now !
I hear your input regarding these tires and you are probably right.
I just had this concerns about the rim width thingy and was surprised how narrower the rim was than my initial thoughts from Trampa’s website.
I had these tires in my stock so I thought of saving money.
But if that’s the case, I think I will go for Trampas Mud-Pluggers 8" I guess.
That should ok right ? (I mean trampa<->trampa stuff should fit  )

The trampa 8" mud pluggers will fit exactly the same as your Qing Da 8" tires. They are both 3.75" bead diameter tires.

The phatlads are best used with 4" bead diameter tires, such as the 9" mud plugger tires.

Really ? But Trampa offers it in their site seamlessly:

Yeah, @Evwan explained this above. Most 6"-8" tires that we use in esk8 are 3.75" bead diameter. Most 9" tires that we use are 4" bead diameter.

The Qing Da and the 8" mud plugger have the same bead diameter. They will both work on the phatlad just fine, but it won’t be pretty, as they sit on the inner lip of the hub.

The phatlads are best used with 4" bead tires.

Got it. 10x !

BTW, the real problem in the Qind was that the 2 parts of the rim could not be closed, there was too much gap.
The lips were less of my concern but it’s good to learn!

I think for the lips we could use something like this right ? Newbee lip spacer

You don’t need that with those Phatlads. The Newbee lip spacer is for 3.75” hubs to adapt to 4” tires. The phatlads have beads for both 3.75” and 4” so no need for the adapter.

In your case you’d either need to clamp the two hub halves together or maybe those tires just aren’t a good match for those hubs. Not sure why there’s a discrepancy between the size they list them at versus what you actually got though. I’d message Trampa about that.

What’s the measurement between the inner beads? That’s where your Qing tires are trying to seat, which is probably why they’re giving you a hard time
