I’m sure no on really cares, but I will finally get a new custom made knee brace made soon I think. :partying_face: Just got a referral from my PCP bc my insurance requires it and there is no reason they (the dr) won’t help me get one.

Bulk made hinged knee braces have helped so far with my old PCL injury but they’re flawed and my good one is starting to show wear and needs replacing anyway so might as well get one made for me so it is more comfortable.

It was a little over 2 years ago that I tore my PCL on a “complete” bridge that was not finished and had huge gaps and I had an asshole truck driver on my ass so I couldn’t slow down as much as I wanted. My board ended up upside down and 5 feet away from me after I hit the biggest gap and landed hard on my bent left knee

I don’t know anyone with a similar injury so no one I know would understand why I’m so excited about getting a knee brace which might cost me 1k if my insurance doesn’t cover it :sweat_smile:

I’m not sure a knee brace could help with that but I’m not a doctor so I could be wrong. :thinking:
I keep reinjuring my PCL because like the ACL once they tear they never heal to the same state again. Even if you get surgery they are stupid easy to reinjure with basic shit and it is annoying af.

I agree, but you can be 100% in the right legally and still end up roadkill. Faster was likely the least worst option but ya - faster makes mistakes hurt more.

Bridge decks around here suck so bad - like bumpy ice mixed with sharp gravel and potholes. I always regret taking the traffic lane across the drawbridge’s in seatown

Omg yes. During CarveSEA we went over the car lane on one of these drawbridges. The deck was made of expanded steel grid like this:

It was like riding on ice, but also bumpy, and it wanted to grab my wheels and train-track like urethane does to cracks in the road. And i was on 9in pneumatics! All I could do was let off the throttle (accelerating or braking definitely felt like it would kill me) try to hold a straight line, and clench my butthole tight enough to bend spacetime until I was across :rofl:

Probably the scariest moment during CarveSEA this year.

Took that same bridge later on, and had the good sense to use the bike lane, which had a very nice grippy smooth surface. Sometimes we dont belong in the street :sweat_smile:

Following traffic laws when possible is great and makes all of us look a little less like hooligans to the laymen.
That said most of us ride in areas with little to no infrastructure that’s designed for us, trying to follow the law often winds up with you in the bike lane in this position:

Or choosing not to run a red light or change to a lane you shouldn’t be in can leave you in this position:

The legal expectation is that these people pay attention to and wait for you. This is not the safe way to ride in the world that I live in, I believe that 100% of the time your safety should be considered a higher priority than following the letter of the law.

Yeah, there are a ton of right turn lanes around here that travel directly through the unprotected bike lane and expect drivers to check almost directly behind them to not run over/cut off a cyclist. I don’t even entirely blame the drivers there. That’s more of a problem with the asinine design for those intersections.

There’s also one pedestrian crossing nearby where a commonly used bike/pedestrian path goes out in front of people coming off the freeway turning right. You cannot go when it’s your green light because right turners also have a green and WILL NOT look for you. I’ve started grabbing a stick to put out in front of me so that someone will stop for me and still people will usually drive into it because they can’t see until they’re halfway through the crosswalk. That one is frustrating and much easier to cross in the 3 seconds between having turned red for everyone and the next group going.

If I ever needed to commit insurance fraud I’d just cross that intersection on my own green light and there’s almost 100% chance I would get hit.

Yep, I don’t fuck with trucks of any size just to be safe. their hoods are too high up so if you do get hit you go under the truck and not on the hood which is more dangerous.

The asshole didn’t even ask me if I was okay after the fall and just sat there staring at me for the 30 seconds it took to move out of the way, so I think it was the best move to not slow down.

This is a huge issue in TX bc almost all intersections have those dangerous right turn lanes where you go right before the intersection. :weary: I think they’re called slip lanes?
It is why I use intersections that don’t have them when possible because almost no one knows what the fuck a yield sign means and I enjoy not being hit by cars. Some are also a blind corner if you’re on the sidewalk which makes them extra spicy and dangerous

Sidewalks around me are all like this. People just don’t make it easy even with infrastructure.

I’ve found that if I act more like a car and keep on the gas they will let me be, as long as i’m not going too crazy.

I think having speed is also something that can be soooooo helpful to get out of situations that are sketchy.

There are many places where I ALWAYS use the road despite there being a sidewalk because in those areas it is legit safer. People never check sidewalks before pulling out but they do normally look where other cars would be making the road safest. The main spot is actually intersections across frontage roads where you’d think it is more dangerous in the road.

I do only use the road at the intersections though because no way in hell am I staying on a busy road with a 55mph speed limit

For me, I use the road because at the speed I go, the shoulder/bikelane/sidewalk is actually dangerous. So much gravel, sand, broken road, bush, tree parts and other debris that the road is much safer to ride 60kph on.

Same here for me. I stick to streets unless it’s super trafficy then I just take it slow.

I’ve found near me too the roads are shitty and the sidewalks are even shittier so it’s the best of the worst to make a decision on.

But that being said who doesn’t like hittin some bumps going really fast. Honestly one of my favorite things to do if i’m prepared for it.

Wide speed bumps are my favorite but sadly TX doesn’t understand how to make them out of concrete so they don’t exist here. We only have the fake bolt on short trashy plastic ones around here. :weary:

Yeah it is bad here too except in downtown austin where it is actually a great bike lane but I don’t have a reason to go there 99% of the time and also get too lost in that area even with google maps on.

I use a lot of “back roads” so I can be in the street without worrying about being hit and without being in gravel and debris hell since I use thane. I do have wheels but just don’t use them since I’d have to use wider trucks and then I’d be unable to get around cars who block the sidewalk on the frontage roads (where you’d probably die if you went in the street)

Omg yeah, they have this stuff on some drawbridges on the Jersey Shore also. I’m not sure if polyurethane wheels are better or worse for this stuff. Don’t look down, don’t accelerate, don’t brake, just go and don’t stop :rofl:
