So, where are we at? What’s the latest for getting traction control to work properly and safely in a 4x4 system?
Looked at split Ppm with 2x2wd with TC for each end but it doesn’t work satisfactorily.
Lol i requested it be made safe on the vesc git years ago. It seems i was ignored
Have you tried wifi?
Only with hot glued data packets.
Probably not the best place for this question. We’re sorta just monkeys with rocks here
There’s a discord for vesc development that vedder looks at. Maybe get some anwsers in there
If there is no proper traction control, then why not go all out and have two separate remotes so you can use tank controls?
All you would need is to 3d print a shell to keep both controllers together in a clean way unless your hands are big enough to hold two at once. Oh and some creative wiring solutions since you’d want both left motors controlled by one VESC and then the right ones controlled by another
I don’t see how that solves any problem lol
I never said it did It is just a more fun option with the potential to be dangerous, but with the default option having issues it isn’t like you’re loosing any safety.
Plus you can do some sick slides by breaking or accelerating more on one side than the other. Before I finally fixed the rust issue in one of my motors I’d slide all the time and I kind of miss it.
Sounds awful lol
Worse than the “tc” that already exists
It could be fun to play with, though… But with one remote for throttle and another for steering, rather than dual throttles. Get moving fast, lean into a turn, and gradually reduce the torque on the inside wheels. I wonder if the turn would get noticeably tighter?
nah, it would/ should be used for drifting or just fucking around with tank control style steering IMO. If you’re going to take the effort for it you might as well go all out and have some fun with it
Last week I tried to enable traction control on my 4wd board.
It has 2xstormcore60d with CAN connected.
I did not know that there are known issues, so I just tried …
This was NOT A GOOD IDEA!
I fired up the remote and gave some duty.
The motors immediately started ratteling like crazy. So I stopped after 2 seconds.
The result was a damage on one of the 4 motors.
The motor doesnt work with Sensor anymore. I have to use HFI for this motor now.
Does anyone else had “results” like this?
Not like that but TC on 4wd is definitely a bad idea.
Ummm… why is it such a bad idea?
I was using it today in some very boggy conditions and it was awesome, it also performed admirably climbing wet grassy banks… awkward a bit at slow speeds. On gravel it was amazing, felt like dirt bike levels of stability.
If theres a reason i shouldnt be using it, ive not turned that info up…
if one wheel stops spinning, they all stop spinning. try braking while turning hard.
It’s been a long time since i’ve used it so it may have been fixed. But the way it used to work is that it would match the speed of all of your wheels to the speed of your slowest turning wheel. This means if one wheel loses traction while you’re braking, it instantly stops, followed by the other 3 wheels instantly stopping also
Thats a real shame, the feel of that on dirt today was astonishing, absolutely loved it.
Such is VESC
I wonder how hard it would be to tweak the code in VESC so that under throttle it matches speeds with the slowest wheel, and under braking it matches speeds with the fastest wheel. Seems like that might give a reasonable approximation of ABS.
Maybe allow for a few percent speed difference so it doesn’t bind up in tight turns.
that sounds dangerous. I feel it would be better if it just turned off while braking if a simple fix was the goal.
Under what conditions would it be dangerous?
