Control the canbus side from the bottom left corner.
From the connection tab you get that error for some reason

Did you really try at the other CAN Page? There is one page in the vesc tool giving that error like @Athrx mentioned.
The new vesc tool is somehow a bit weird. It took me 5 minutes to find out you have to choose the USB COM port by hand now if the correct one isnt in default.
I test other some different esc I have and all of them work
