Power Traverse - electric snowboard

After enough crashes with backpacks and similiar just the smallest tool hurts a ton getting it stuck into your back, cant guess the anxiety of crashing with a bomb strapped to your back, snow sports are full of crashes and falls, why not just do a top mounted box like esk8.

Great input guys.

I wanted to try ammo-style power but that sounded like a technical nightmare.

You crash, you get hurt.

Keep in mind this is an extreme sport adult toy.
Not recommended for beginners.

Luckily we don’t need to sell thousands to make a living.

We do need to sell a 1000 to hit decent prices on parts.

Ording 250 motors now, won’t pay the bill until I ride it.

Have you tested mounting the battery in the middle of the board between the bindings? Yes it makes the board heavy and makes tricks less fun to do but its the same with E-mountainboarding and normal mountainboarding you trade lighweight for electric propulsion. You could test with a normal waterproof box in the middle like most Emtb’s do nowadays. And maybe in the future distribute the battery over the length of the board (maybe even under the bindings in some way) to keep the battery low profile and the weight distributed along the board.

We will try.

I have ridden with my bag between the legs to rest.

On the board, it feels like mountainboarding, on the back more like snowboarding.

Our bags will latch to bindings offering the best of both.

I feel like a flatter maybe double offset battery would be better, the less that’s protruding from your back the less it will hurt when you fall on your back.

Either that or a backpack designed to safely hold a bunch of lipos

@jack.luis good idea.

The current pack is 21s4p 21700

I could see it broken into p and built into the pack as individual cell blocks but the BMS becomes a challenge. I want to swap out the packs, quickly to ride more.

I was going to suggest a pack here that doubles as protection from falling on spinning paddles but 84 cells probably wouldnt fit.

Maybe if you put some cells between the legs but most at the rear you wouldn’t lose the snowboard feel.

Really neat stuff!

Always keep the BMS attached to the packs, any battery swap system you create should have a bms per pack.

I’d hire someone on here to make you a pack as if it were going in a board. That means its somwhat flat, and has flex tolerant series connections. Then id sandwich that pack between two abs sheets and throw it in a sturdy backpack

Take it from me who just built a 20s4p 21700 pack, it will be big and heavy and expensive to make. 99% of your customers will only own one.

I made my pack as 5x 4s4p ‘segments’

Another good idea. I thought to build the ESC and cells into a fender but the fender was to Zuckerberg for me.

I’m a purist snowboarder, I would lose have my riding buddies if I made it with a fender.

I like it, FYI the backpacks have a hard barrier too.

We will explore more after the next test.

Last season I 3d printed a cover for the ESC + receiver and velco strapped it to the pack. next test I’ll simply use the 2 metal plates to better protect the gear.

Why? It’s just additional weight and size. You can just as easily attach it to the charger and connect your connectors when charging.

Edit: unless you’re controlling discharge as well, then it adds value

Edit 2: from a business standpoint, it’s going to be a lot easier to sell/buy cheap bulk chargers for a protected pack, than deal with an external BMS, so maybe this point is moot

Edit3:
@jack.luis wins this round :stuck_out_tongue:

Those are some awesome looking motors! I can imagine the power they’ll deliver!
I am curious about how big they are, I’d love to see their size compared to the snowboard they’ll be mounted on. No reason behind it, just curious!

Don’t forget to have some grommets on the battery wires going thought the plate, or you will have fireworks on the mountain

Those motors looks sweet, if/when you can, share a video of them spinning please
