Yes. Just because you can’t fathom it doesn’t mean it’s unrealistic, you probably use a ~$40 remote and hoyt’s is $120-$180. Someone absolutely will pay that kind of money for the quality product they know they’re going to get. And as was just pointed out above, their 7” tires/hubs fall right in line with, if not cheaper than, what’s on the market for high end boards currently.
I suppose your right, and I do use a $40 vx1, but there is no quality issues and the fit and finish is on point, so quality can not be the factor, just hype, and preference.
I do agree the quality on the wheels will not be comparable with the sunmate mass produced randomly drilled holes etc. I guess my priorities are different then the persons that are buying expensive wheel setups. For me these are just toys and I budget “play money” accordingly. I have many toys so my money gets spread out, if this were my only hobbie, maybe I wouldn’t bat an eye at $500+ wheels.
Also the price on everything has about doubled in the last year, even cheap shit like 4.12 flipsky esc have gone from $45 to $90. I’m having a hard time trying to buy esc’s for two builds now just because I can’t justify 600$ a board for esc’s.
Short story, you win, go buy your fancy ass wheels now.
I did however make a mistake, my mistake not theirs, they asked me what diameter bearings I wanted, 8, 10, 12mm, well I already have some 12mm for my mbs trucks, and my longboard has old 8mm Paris trucks so I opted for 8mm thinking I could switch these wheels up on the decks if I wanted. Well it’s not 28mm od bearings like mbs, these are 26mm holes with a insert to take them smaller for the 8mm bearing it seems. I made the assumption that since 12mm was an option they would be 12x10x28mm bearings.
So…. Do I spin them on my lathe to 28mm to fit. Or do I try and find some 12x26mm bearings?
It is expensive, not going to argue. But if you can find cheaper 5" wheels rated for speed, I’ll buy them for you. It’s taken over 4 years to bring these 5" tires to life. Also, the rims are locally sourced CNC aluminum. Yes, could have saved a lot by sourcing in China or switching to nylon. But that’s inconsistent with our commitment to sustainability and local sourcing.
Also bear in mind, its $500 for tires, tubes, rims x4 and pulleys x2 and free shipping. If you want new and innovative product, it’s going to cost some $.
Seems like all the newest, coolest and most innovative components seem to be around $500 a pop give or take. Stooge 3 Link NKP trucks, Apex Airs, basic Sender decks, Stormcore 100D, Xcell wheels, and now Hoyt 5" pneumies, among others, I’m sure. Kind of a big pill to swallow, but at that price point, I feel like you get what you pay for which is a premium product from a top notch vendor with actual CS, all of which are rare in the Esk8 scene. They’re not for everyone, but I feel these products have their place and the prices are usually justified in these cases. And I’m a cheap bastard, so it feels weird for me to say that.
I’m not arguing the cost, I understand what quality cost, and know what a quality machine shop would charge to mill the wheels as well, and I’m sure they are beautiful, just sticker shock I suppose.
