🔑 PM Encryption now enabled

Aloha Gang,

During this evenings patch upgrade we added a new plugin called Discourse Encrypt

The intent of the plugin is to enable users to encrypt Private Messages on esk8.news. While this function has been tested by Discourse Meta team the local staff has not had the opportunity to validate the functionality.

Please consider this an effort as it is intended - an attempt to improve privacy across the forum - but treat the tool as a beta function until we have some real experience with it in production.

Details on Discourse Encrypt can be found here:

For those who are having “PM Encrypt Remorse” here is how to disable the function:

If you select “deactivate encryption” it will do the following:

Invalidate the keys installed on your device(s)
Remove the user or hide secure messages from the user
Prevent the user from the ability to send or receive secure messages

baseline images of how it works with encryption enabled

Default with enabled

encrypt_message_default

Default manually disable encrypt

encrypt_message_deslect

Default message user who does not have encrypt enabled

encrypt_default_other_user_not_enabled

Disable and remove encrypted messages (not massages that would be weird)

go to your account>preferences
scroll to the bottom and click “Deactivate Encryption on this Device”
de-auth_esk8

Select the hamburger next to “Activate Encrypted Messages” and select “Reset Encryption Key Pair”

hit save

encrypt_PM_reset_encryption_key

Default after encrypt PM is disabled

encrypt_disabled_message_default

now someone should NOT be able to initiate a new encrypted message with you.

Here is a screen shot of what it looks should look like after you have “RESET ENCRYPTION KEY PAIR” and someone attempts to initiate a secure message
