So I just got my SKP 6384s and Newbee 4GS gear drives set up today. Only to find one of the pinion gears scraping the inside of the gear cover…
I torched the pinion to remove it and see if i maybe didnt have it fully seated but it was installed properly. I spent a while sanding the area inwide the gear drive cover where it was making contact with but it still wasnt enough to eliminate the contact. It looks like the SKP motor shafts have a slight step right at the bottom which is preventing the pinion gear from sliding all the way down onto the shaft, and the Newbee gear drives arent designed with much of any tolerance to accomodate.
What is the best way to fix this issue? I was thinking either have a machine shop try to shorten the gears by 1 or 2mm or machine a recessed hole in the inside of the gear drive cover. The ghetto method would be to put precusion shims between the motor and the plate that it bolts to…
if you go the spacing route, i’d suggest rather than washers, to try use a whole thin sheet of material. this way you will maintain the thermal transfer between the motor and the plate.
I ran into the same issue. I had to make 3mm spacers to resolve it. Quickest solution for me was to laser cut them from balsa wood (I have a laser cutter/engraver).
I know @Ac53n has capability to make some from metal sheets for better heat management.
I can indeed make a lasercut plate to space the motor further out - just let me know what thickness you would need. Its cheaper if i can get multiple sets made, but if you really just need a pair i wouldnt mind.
Based on my measurements, it looks like 1.5mm would work. The newbee plate is 2mm thick and the step on the SKP motor shaft stops 3mm from the motor. Is that thickness doable? Looks like Unshackle could use a pair too.
Just 3d printed some PETG-CF, 1.6mm thick, I should be able to just slide them out and replace with a aluminum spacer if thermals become an issue. (thanks for the design idea @andoug )
