Ok you guys that run one motor are nutz.

So I was fixing my board, and unplugged my phase wires on one side. Didnt know it. So, went to the store, and I was all over the road. wiggle wabble. Had to steer when hitting brakes. Sure I have 11/2 inches longer per axle, but still. That was flat out dangerous. And SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Yeah, I could tighten my bushings wayyy up, but that would feel worse. Thank the Esk8 gods for dual power. It takes two babayyy, for me and you, it takes two.

It’s not bad if you have a beefy motor or high reduction ratio and a narrow hanger

I rode a single 5065 on 160mm trucks for months, catch is I had a top speed of 18mph

My top speed was about eight.

Do you have traction control enabled?

No, I dont think that would help, if only one motor has power.

Traction control limits the motors to be within a certain ERPM of each other, stock is 2000 ERPM and if the one registers at 0 ERPM because it’s not connected then your top speed would be 286 motor RPM

Or maybe it’s smarter than that and your motors are just WEAK

At this point, with both motors powered, will I gain anything by going traction controlled?

Traction control prevents wheels from spinning wildly when one wheel looses traction, I always use it

I haven’t gone one motor before, but have had times where one motor was drastically worse than the other (thanks to rust). You eventually get used to and might even enjoy the extra sliding that occurs.

I have had it almost become a problem before though like one time in a parking lot I didn’t see a car backing up until I turned the corned so I had to put on all full brakes at the end of the turn.Did a cool little power slide into a nearby empty parking spot but if the spot had a car then I would have had to bail or suffer the embarrassment of running into a slowly moving truck. The driver saw me so at the very least I wouldn’t have been killed by the truck.

Totally with you here, especially if you’re on rkp. Any hard turn its easy to lsoe traction. And braking sucks too

1wd braking is not safe enough for esk8 imo

How do you guys think a single motor 1wd build would compare to an identical single motor 2wd build?

1WD will always bias turning in the same direction (reverse when braking), 2WD will always fight any turning, but it’ll behave much better if hard cornering since sometimes wheels lift in turns

You forget that also your amp settings are halved now too, so when you have two motors that both run 50 battery amps and 100 motor amps, with one lost its now half of your power.

Sounds like this would happened even when not under power? Like a really bad power oversteer.

Would traction control be an option for single motor 2wd build? 1wd sounds more intuitive

Single motor 2WD will always fight turns just because there’s no differential, powered or not

Traction control only works on 2 motor 2WD

I’m currently running single drive because half my ESC blew up. 140kv 6354 on 2.78:1 with 115m wheels on 270mm trucks. Split angle 45/15 soft in front hard in rear. Turns great and sometimes I forget it’s single drive except the 0-top speed is like 6 seconds and top speed is like only 40kph.

TL;DR: skill issue.

Been testin a 15kw single locked dual drive on the V-5 chassis.

We have had a couple of good track sessions vetting with some of the best riders in the world on it. They are saying surprisingly, on the track it is pretty dang good.

On turn entry the drag from the locked differential drags the inside wheel and gives a small “drag brake” affect. When weight is transfered to the rear on turn exit the board tightens up and has a point and shoot feel.

I have miles street, trail, track and uphill on it. I like it.
Short slow tight turns you notice the drag but anything above 15mph is negligible. Straight line riding it feels more like the board is running on a rail than open diff.
At the beginning i was thinking this was going to be a marginal at best idea and would need to adapt a differential. The more the guys track test this the more we are learning about it and it is looking promising.

Downsides are reduced efficiently.

Upsides with a single is less electronics, less hanger weight.

Sounds like your hanger is too wide and maybe you just aren’t used to it.

It’s worth mentioning to the rest of the people here. This is NOT a normal single drive board. It has a single motor that powers both wheels. It has a locked feeling on the corners but just takes some getting used to.

Incomparable to the garbo that is a normal single wheel drive.
