I feel like they should just thread the actual hole and not use helicoil.

Nah. Helicoil is stronger since it has a larger engagement with the aluminum and is steel-on-steel with the fastener.

ya need to install the helicoil properly and add a dab of thread lockerā€¦ after locktite has set, run a tap slowly and properly back down hole! helicoil = much stronger than just cutting threads into aliā€¦
