My motor smoked and fizzled! Why?

So I was riding pretty easy, going bout 15mph when my board started to slow. I looked down and my motor kinda flames up proceeded by it being dead. It worked fine before, was battle hardened and the gears were set at 16/60 for 8 in on a 10s…

Is this a fluke or are my settings wrong? I will say that a few days prior, I had ridden this board into some soft sand and when i drug it out, it was covered in what seemed to be metal shavings. Im guessing iron deposits in the soil? Could this have caused my smoking motor?

It sounds like metallic debris got in your motor and shorted it out.

Was the stator hardened too, or just the rotor? Do you have a photograph of the motor after battle hardening?

I bought them used from dr mike so they came hardened it seems… the stator was not hardened and i thought duat wouldnt be an issue so the motors were dragged through the soft sand for a little bit…

Here are pics after

Honestly there was a lot of shavings on the outside… im sure some got inside. I need to clean the other before the same thing happens

ferritic sand is awful on motors, but usually only sticks to the magnets… (qwads) but I’ve had motors lock up because of all the iron in the sand… it is possible it was slightly locked and the other motor was dragging it around causing heating…

open her up and looky-look

That shit was no joke. I thought i escaped any damage but looks like there was some inside causing it to go boom while the other was free of debris. Still gonn open the other and give it a quick once over…

can you determine where the magic smoke escaped?

Looked like the fartherst part away from the pulley. Cant be too sure tho. I dont see marks anywhere and the whole thing has that sweet burnt electronic smell
