My Esk8s. A journal of sorts

I can post a pic later of what I did, but essentially some brass 8mm sleeves on either end that I could cut and file down.

I found some bearing spacers for 8mm skate axles that will be perfect for this. Great idea Jimmy. Even though those keys are never coming lose with 638, I’ve always been paranoid that one could work its way out eventually. Extremely unlikely, but catastrophic if it ever happened at speed.

Securing the key in the pinion with a spacer loctited on the end of the axle will provide some extra protection (mental or otherwise :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:)

I feel super lucky that I have had keys come loose 3 times now and all just caused noise and didn’t send me flying…

I think I figured out how this is going to fail:

there you have it

still better than nothing, I suppose

I’m running this with straight cut pinions, so I have zero concern over this ever failing. Even using the extra loctited spacer is overkill. It’s purely to satisfy my paranoia. If I were using the boardnamics short keyway axles, I wouldn’t bother.

There’s something about the chopped axle with open keyway that whispers in my ear at 30mph “yer gonna die”

AFAIK there have been zero instances of green loctite failures on straight cuts.

I don’t think folks use Loctite 290 for that

also the spacer will just hit the wall of the gear box was my other thought to further keep the pinion in

ok, sure. I have not heard about a single instance of loctite 638/648/680 failing with straight cuts.

Yeah dude. I really wish I had tried the straight cut.
I expect that is a much more robust set up.

I have helicala now on the Llama. But had straights originally now in an drawer…

I think I will put the straights on here during a cold winter day.

Yesterday was butt ass cold…
There was no riding except the Onewheels in the house.

Late at night I got to working on the Third Demonseed.

I put Razillian’s Precision DKP trucks together.

There is no comparison really between cast parts, and these buttery CNC parts.
But I still wanted to see them together.

To be fair the Evolve trucks have hung around for over 5 years now and have seen a lot of different set ups and some pretty serious miles…

I am going to need some more 10mm spacers…

This grip tape was inspired by Al’s board. @glyphiks
I was trying not to copy, copy it…and I am really stoked on how it turned out.

The hold up on this board has been kinda silly.
I needed to drill out the adapter clamps Razillian sent me.
Which means I needed to go my father in law’s house… Which is across town…
Yada yada yada… I ordered nice mounts from @IDEA because these trucks seem to deserve nice parts to go with them.

So soon I will have something a little like this…

Which I am super stoked about.
Makes me want new motors to go in here to make it all shinny and new…

I actually have some new 6374s… But I really think 6354s are a better fit here to not add a bunch of weight…

So I have to take a little pause until I get the mounts. But I am pretty anxious to get my DKP vibes on… Even though thane riding takes a major hit in the winter…

I did get out and ride a little bit today.

School pickup which was nice.
Got to 44 and was sunny.

And a little bit after work… But the temperature was tanking…so I just did 7 miles.

I have been doing this a bit and it keeps working. I have been able to change remote hands and hold the Z.mote with my left hand.
Huge help with the cold.

And now I’m going to mess with the Gravel Boi some…

Well.
My adventures tonight didn’t work out…

I did take the Gravel Boi apart.

And I put grip tape on it which looks cool.

And then I got going on installing the 4GS.

And it was a delight because the parts are awesome and go well together…
And then I hit a snag and have to stop…

The Flipsky 6374 BH 140kv motors have a 10mm portion of the shaft that sticks out 8mm so the motor pinion can’t sit far enough…

So I need to get new motors for this board…

Diy is a disease…

I wanted 6384s anyways…
Onto the wall goes half a board…
It can wait for parts with the Demonseed…

Axles are easy to replace though, unless all of the flipsky 6374 stepped like that?

@Boardnamics do you have any 6374 axles you could sell Rafael?

Edit: see you’re using newbee - I’m not sure if BN motor axles have that step or not…

I think @rafaelinmissouri is referring to the motors axle right? Not truck axle?

What do you mean by this? Can’t you cut it down to fit?

Edit: never mind I read this as key

I tend to think of the idea of changing a motor shaft as being hard to do.

I had not really gone in that direction of thinking.
But you made me think…
And I went in the closet and I have several other Flipsky 6374 motors.

And sure enough they also have stepped shafts.
I have some old maytech motors but they have 8mm all the way…

So yeah.

These motors and the Newbee drives will not be a go.

That is unfortunate.

@Ean.esk8 Perhaps worth noting on your website that the 4GS are not compatible with flipsky motor stepped shafts. Not your job to tell people about other vendors, but could prevent someone else ending up in Rafael’s situation.

One solution I could go to is getting the 6384 140kv motors from Boardnamics.
They are not stepped.
They are what I use on the Gravel Flux.

Be about 230 bucks.
I actually kinda wanted 6384s on here… Since it’s a decent battery here.

But for some reason this was the last straw for this board…
I thought I was done buying stuff for it. Which got super out of hand as it is.
I have issues…

So I think the Gravel Boi is going to stay on Matrix II and get some belts.

Which makes me a little less excited about it.

So this snag was a bummer.

But here is where it’s going to go. or I think it’s going to go…

The Flux will get some upgrades.

I have been wanting new motors for the Flux…
And now seems like a good time for that since I need new motors for the Drives.

So the Flux will get Matrix III when I can buy them.
And the 4gs drives which will be nice.

And hopefully nice juicy new motors.

Sorry for this happens, man. But if you or your friend have 3d printer, i could send you the file of motor plate spacer. But base on the photo it would bring another problem…the shaft seem bit too short.

It’s ok.

I will make these work with other motors.
