My Esk8s. A journal of sorts

Get you a OneWheel is all I can say… Riding right now…
A different kind of riding…
But somehow still riding…

It’s that nasty wet stuff still, nothing fun til the temperature drops. Still need to make my snow scooter project that I’ve been putting off.

Look at that… I hit a mile already…

I will get thicker skin soon…
But since the cold is new I just don’t want to be outside…

We did in fact get a little bit of snow last night… Less than an inch… But certainly puts the seal of authenticity on winter…

There will be no lunch break ride…

Instead I will tinker.

Let’s see how far I get with the Gravel Flux.

I think it’s always a good sign when stuff comes apart as intended.

Okey dokey…
I got the NewBee 4GS Drives installed on the Gravel Flux.

Great job on the assembly video dude @Ean.esk8
Ryan @ShutterShock thanks to your video as well.
It made me think about stuff.

I had no hicups or issues with the install.
It all went really smooth.

The wheel adapter is nice.
I had the right length bolts…

Being able to line it up on the axle alone without the motors in the way is really cool.

One thing that worries me is how relatively little material of the clamp is in contact with the axle.
I guess the wheel supports it on the other side.

The only thing about install that sucked were the grub screws for the motor pinions. Just sucked to line up.
And the grub screws for the truck clamps.
Not sure how much they do because it’s pretty hard to get torque on them.
Also tiny tiny Allen Key begging to strip…

It’s nice being able to move it in and out on the axle.

I am using a spacer and a washer between the axle and hubs. I am not sure this was made obvious in the instructions. But I definitely think is a must.

I really like the wheel adapter and the way it interacts with the gear and the bushing concept.

I like how you can drop the motors out and there is no backlash to adjust.

So basically all you are doing here is tightening a bunch of screws in sequence and you are set…

I really liked this install!!!

I had a little bit more resistance on the left side on the first few spins but it seemed to loosen up.

I only spun it up a tiny bit and not at full speed.
Wanna let that loctite sit a couple days…

But it’s looking good and it was fun to do.

I am looking forward to actually riding them.

I also finally got around to slaping the Green and white Riptide Bushings in.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Alright.

I am still hanging in there damnit.

Even though it was 32 and this morning looked like this I still went on the Tow-Haero for school pick up…

It was just 3.2 miles…
And it was cold…
But it was enjoyable to get out and ride a bit.

The kids said it was not too cold on the way home.
So maybe we can keep this going!!!

I am wondering what there is out there in the world of cool battery boxes…

Something to replace the basic junction box I have on the Haero.

It works. And it looks ok.
But I’m jazzing stuff up and pondering something nicer.

It’s a 12s6p P42A and a Unity in there.

This 3D Seevisas looks nice.

What else is out there?

After some miles to wearing in, you will love the riding feeling of 4GS

This is the story ot the second fall of the Haero…

The Haero was my original urban carver and a favorite set up for a long time…

It was my first taste of matrix II without bindings and it was delicious.

Definitely my favorite ride type!

But long ago the Haero fell out of favor because of the Flux - which remains the favorite.

So I tried to give the Haero a second life closer to it’s real origins and went full bindings on it.

And as much as I romanticize the idea of flying through mountain bike parks doing jumps and shit like the Trampa dudes the reality is that was not my vibe.

I probably didn’t give it a full on college try and persist to the point of making it more fun.

But for the bit of off roading I like to do the Gravel Flux does a killer job. I prefer navigating the giant platform I can move around on, and fly off of if needed.

The wheel base and stance on the Haero felt cramped to me and I could not get over it.
And I hurt myself with it this summer.
I got stuck In the mud. All 4 wheels stuck.
Instead of getting off my bindings I proceeded to jump out of the mud.
Me out of shape.
40 lb board.
Stuck in the mud.

I thought I caught a hernia…

I only had a small abdominal tear.
Stupid ass me should have reached down and unstrapped and stepped to the side.
But nooooo.

So I didn’t ride the Haero for months until recently when the Gravel Flux was put out of commission.

I took the bindings off to be able to spread out more.
But the Haero still feels squirly to me.

So something had to give.

It is a pretty sweet drive train.
12s6p P42A. Unity on Infinisink. And Flipsky 6374 140kvs

It was a torque monster.

I pondered what to do with the drive.
And I pondered.
And I pondered.

And I decided.
Hey.
I could make something similar to the Gravel Flux but a little bit lower profile.

I know I like the form factor and concept of the Gravel Flux.
I can run something like it with 8 inch knobbies.

I can put the Boardnamics AT drives on it

So I hit up @tomiboi and he gave me a super deal on this gorgeous Blue Deck and another set of Hubba Hubs.

So we will have a Gravel Tomiboi to go with the Gravel Flux.

And yeah. It may seem kind of redundant. But it is good to have a back up if needed for towing.
And for winter time this is a set up I will take out a lot.

And I can slap Matrix III on here as soon as they will sell me some and Kevin has adapters for them.

So the Haero falls off again…

On the immediate term I will probably just tape the box that is on top of the Haero onto the Tomiboi and run the wires the same way just so I can feel the ride.

But I do want to ponder ways to make the top mount look nicer. And I would really like to sort out a slick way to do the cables.

This Deck is so pretty and so well done I kinda feel bad and that I am not doing it justice.

But I will take it out and ride it… That is for sure.

I got a bit of tinkering done tonight.

I pulled the tow bracket off the Haero and on to the Gravel Flux.
Hopefully I will have a mayden voyage on the 4GS tomorrow.

Then I stared at and caressed the Tomiboi…
And pondered how the same junction box would look.

And then I broke out the Hubbas and changed the tires over and started taking the chain sprockets out of the Haero.

I tell you what.
This may seem silly to some folks and like not much of a difference.
But I really like the stretched hubs and how it changes the look of the tire.

And I really like the look of the Hubbas in general.

So this part really makes me happy…

So I made decent progress.

Next up I can put together the BN drives.
I just need to pick which set of Matrix II s are least worn out…

This would be a lot cooler if I had them sweet Matrix IIIs already @MBS
But I suppose I will get the joy of tinkering again here soon.

So good progress. Good stoping point.

Me too. But I only run 6’s so I need more tire options.

The new Gravel boi will be sweet. I love that blue deck - I almost bought it from Tomiboi when I got my black one for my Hercaleez board but since I’m heavier I opted for the extra bottom layer of carbon. That blue looks so nice though.

Well…
This feels a little weird. And it’s totally unexpected.

But I am not ordering the Orangutan 105s today.

That 150 is no joke…

I don’t have an immediate need for them…

i have no desire for them as i still have another set of boosted 105s and hollow wheels. I also don’t have a board to put them on.

Yeah dude.
I only have 2 set ups these could maybe go on.

The Llama or the DKP Demonseed.

And I would be shocked if I ended up liking these better than the MAD 101s on the Llama.

Now that I have experienced that grip it may be hard for another thane wheel to take the throne…

What will go on the Demonseed is up in the air.
The Precision DKP trucks are quite a bit taller than the Evolve trucks.

So I hope I can run little wheels still mounted Drop through. But I may have to go to caguamas.

did you find out if the unlimited hubs still work?
