My bushing deformed... heat, or too much carving?

Installed some new Riptide WFB 88A bushings in my pushboard this morning. Went on an hour long ride, did lots of carving (these bushings make these paris RKPs feel like surf rodz TKPs, holy shit I love them :heart_eyes_cat: ) When I arrived home (after a ride in the car, where there’s a chance the trunk was lacking air conditioning) I noticed that the front cone bushing had melted and deformed around the washer I used for it. I’ll have to replace it.

It wasn’t too hot today (high of 29C, 84F), but maybe this could have happened as a result of it being squished too much by my carving? Maybe 88a is too soft for a 75kg fellow like me? (It certainly isn’t kranked down hard, just a bit after it’s tight)

Has anyone experienced this before? The other 3 bushings seem fine

You got a lot of exposed thread on there, looks pretty cranked down to me

Wow.

Do you have a photo of this from another angle, more towards the side?

Unfortunately all pictures were taken after I had unbolted the bushing to check on the other one. And I really doubt I over-tightened them. There’s way more force being put on them while carving than what I’m applying with the king-pin nut.

I’m not sure about exactly what caused your issue, but I can tell you that I actively ride in 100+ f (38+ c) weather and have had no issues with bushings deforming at all. The bushing on my back trucks gets a lot hotter too since I have hub motors and that entire truck is basically a heat sink on hot days. I am around 55 kg but I don’t think your weight alone at that temp would have caused them to melt.

Have you tried reaching out to Riptide to see if they have any idea what could cause it? They’d probably know best if it was a mistake you made or just a defective bushing

OK, never seen that before. As a general rule we do not recommend WFB for LDP or pump / deep carve setups. I would suggest APS 85a for that application. This does not explain what happened however. If you are in the USA, I would like you to send me the bushing for inspection and I will send you replacements or alternates, your choice.

Shoot, wish I hadn’t bought 100€ worth to try out on all my current boards :see_no_evil:

I might be able to do that, PM me an address and I’ll get it done.

I ordered from sickboards, so they would be the ones responsible for warranty I think. I’ll wait a bit and see how my other boards fare with these bushings… I probably won’t be pumping with my electric ones lol

We normally bypass our retailers regarding rare situations like this. We may have them send the replacements but that is it. Retailers are not set up to deal with situations such as this. Do you happen to have a durometer tester?

Why do you not recommend WFB for carving?

I don’t have a durometer tester unfortunately.

WFB has a lower tensile strength than APS or KranK

If you an adult and you go fast, you want stiffer bushings

Oranatang bushings are great.
