Much to gain with Freebord hooks?

I’m not willing to risk bindings and the trap hazard but have wondered about these. I know they were a thing in the past, but anyone still using them? Gain much leverage? Still dicey bailing?

This guy makes some good ratcheting ones

I prefer the @tomiboi ratcheting toe clips. The s2 bindings you’re asking about I still use and it’s the easiest to bail out of id say. It definitely gives you leverage but not the most compared to the other bindings.

I’ll see if I can clamp them in place for a test ride before I start drilling holes then.

I had them on my bajaboard and fucking loved them. Could get massive leverage off them, easy to bail from and when I took them off, I was a better rider for having used them.

Can’t say this will apply to every setup, but for me and the baja, they were absolute gold.

Another option is a foot stop. Less leverage and much less trap hazard, but gives you much more leverage than nothing. Also keeps your foot from popping around while going through chunder.

I :100: believe it allows me to take bumps/crack/tracks with a good bit more speed than without.

Freeboards/Tommy Clamps are good in-between bindings and foot stops.

Mmm, at the least I should grab one of those footstops or similar to use the bracket to mount the Freebord hook. Save me drilling in the wrong spot.

 Turned out pretty close on the truck bolts but the drop makes it too high. Dunno if I’ll pursue this one, definitely felt the cornering advantage but felt the trip hazard straight up

Everything. You gain everything.

Enough leverage to hang off a Bajaboard.

You find them hard on the top of your foot?

Yeah they sell overpriced pads for them… Personally I just adjust them and toughen up my feet so I don’t need pads on them, but if your roads are really rough and you’re riding on urethane wheels for some reason then the foot hooks can definitely put extra stress on your feet.

I did and I put a chuck of thick leather on the surface that touches your shoe.

True, falls are more nasty bc you can’t properly bail (at least I can’t, I watched Sydney do a text book bail onto sand with knee pads on once).

If you use freeboard type hooks in the urban areas, you can manage curbs and big cracks better on heavy boards. I find that they help with heavy duty acceleration and hard braking. They do limit foot placement adjustments if you race on tracks with mild to tight turns.

They don’t make sense if you are using 3link trucks.

Anyone use the S2 or tomiboi bindings on a carbon board like the atlas or zues?

Could you explain the 3-link thing more? Seems like people are using mbs strap in the front for tighter turns. Wouldn’t this help as well?

Maybe because if you are riding super hard on a Stooge board, you really need the full support from the MBS binding vs the half hold of the S2 style bindings.

panic stops with some type of bindings(i use tomiboi springs) and improved leverage in turns are a clincher for bindings. If i were you i would progress into it,the hooks are a good start, easy escape. I just max speed tested bailing with bindings, all things considred it went well,i was going …fast .
even 1 front only will help. good luck

I’ve used the S2 bindings (also with the padded Summerboard “Launchpad” covers) and the Tomiboi ratcheting bindings and eventually gave up on them for the MBS bindings both for the comfort and effectiveness. I think there’s no real advantage to using those hard bindings over an MBS binding without the heel strap. Specifically, I think as long as you don’t have the MBS bindings cinched down to the point of discomfort, it’s just as easy to get out of them quickly as the S2s and Tomibois.

@esk8windsor, at one point I had the S2s on a Flux deck which had some CF in it and overall was a very stiff deck with the enclosure.

I really like my carbon fiber decks, but installing bindings is difficult with it because of having to drill into the carbon fiber. Half bindings seems to be the next best option. I’ve ordered one of the tomiboi ones and im looking into getting a cnc’d adapter made to extend it from the top of the truck baseplate, with the ability to angle it like the S2. The newbee footstop + 3D printed S2 adapter looks to be a good base for design.

The Tomiboys crash pretty well too
