Mountainboard carbon fibre DIY

Hi guys, this is my first post in this forum . I’m trying to build my own carbon fiber mountainboard (electric 6.5kW)

this my configuration (starting from the top of the board):

  • 1x plain carbon-kevlar 188 gsm 0°/90°
  • 1x twill carbon fiber 200 gsm +45°/-45°
  • 2 x ud carbon fiber 200 gsm 0°
  • 1x twill carbon fiber 200 gsm +45°/-45°
  • 1x ud carbon fiber 400 gsm 90°
  • 1x twill carbon fiber 200 gsm +45/-45° (#)
  • Core (3D core PET 5mm)
  • 1x twill carbon fiber 200 gsm +45/°-45° (/)
  • 1x ud carbon fiber 400 gsm 90°
  • 1x twill carbon fiber 200 gsm +45/°-45°
  • 2 x ud carbon fiber 200 gsm 0°
  • 2x plain carbon-kevlar 188 gsm 0°/90°

Plus the reinforcement on the two bends (starting from the top, each side) the pieces to reinforce are about 250mm (to cover the bends):

  • here starts the ‘#’ layer
  • 1 x ud carbon fiber 200 gsm 0°
  • 1x ud carbon fiber 400 gsm 90°
  • 1x twill carbon fiber 200 gsm +45°/-45°
  • Core (3D core PET 5mm)
  • 1x twill carbon fiber 200 gsm +45°/-45°
  • 1x ud carbon fiber 400 gsm 90°
  • 1 x ud carbon fiber 200 gsm 0°
  • here starts the ‘/’ layer

it would be maybe 9 - 9.5 mm

(0° means fiber aligned with the long side of the board)

what do you think about that? Too stiff? Too flex (I don’t think so)? the shape is really like the Trampa board and since it has to go at around 60 Km/h it must be strong enough.

(too late now to make changes :joy:)

Here some pics, the mold is made up of MDF covered with epoxy and it’s really smooth (in the pics the release agent it was not dry). If you want to see my truck you can check out this link:

(in the end the vaccum pressure was about -0.8/0.84 bar)

Hope to post some flex test soon

Siiick! Cant wait to see your progress! Im looking forward to doing similar but with a press

No proper experience with carbon, but I reckon that is gonna be super flexy

Woah, very interesting.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes

Hey, very cool DIY build started here! nice design for the truck too.
What epoxy/glue will you use, it will define also a lot the flex of your deck.
I have never made a deck out of CF, but it is how I make my deck (vacuum process) I will sit here and learn more
(if you want I can find an old topic on the french forum, I remember a cool deck made out of CF)

I’ve used Epoxy resin because it’s the best resin to work with carbon fiber, and the vacuum it’s the first process to make something good.
Resin infusion it’s better, and at the top working with prepreg and autoclave, but they require more work.
The french post could be interesting, so if you have time link here :ok_hand::ok_hand:.
Anyway tomorrow I’ll cut the board and hope to post some flex test soon :call_me_hand:

Hi! Today i’ve cutted the board and this is the result
I think it’s the right stiffness for me (I weigh 93Kg)
The board is really lightweight it’s just 1,2Kg. It looks very good :call_me_hand:t2::call_me_hand:t2:

I still have to put some resin to fill the edges

Looks awesome!

I have the flex test video, but I don’t find the way to post it :sweat_smile:

You need to upload to youtube or similar and then share the link :+1:

The board looks amazing, cant wait to see the flex test!

Yeah! Awesome !! Looks perfect indeed :ok_hand:
Well done

great work!

Nice work!
If you don’t mind me asking. What was the cost of materials in this?

So…when will we be starting to throw money at our screens?

The project has started from the mold, so…
For the mold:

  • 35€ for the MDF
  • 0€ CNC work

For the board, I’ve bought all from:

http://www.mikecompositi.it/default.aspx

https://www.aliexpress.com

You can take a look at all the prices here:

So the total was 295,52€, but I didn’t use all the stuff (especially the resin)

I think you can go with 250€
