Mountain Man | A 4WD Go-Anywhere Mountainboard

Here it is - my just-in-time build thread for Mountain Man.

I promised @xsynatic, @Shadowfax, and others I’d get a build thread up before end of year. Consider this my accountabili-buddy nod. I’ll finish this up over the coming days.

This is my first DIY. As such, I humbly requested + received a massive amount of help from friends - most of whom are right here on the forum. I’m extremely grateful for the suggestions, gut-checks, sanity-checks, buddy-checks, and general wisdom of every single person who helped this build become real.

(I’ll put a “Special Thanks” section at the end with as many folks as I can remember. If I missed your name, please accept my sincere apology + DM me to wiggle my brain cells.)

This board is my second esk8. My first was an AUXPack-equipped Exway Atlas Pro 4WD. Though I loved being able to go anywhere and yeet up hills, there was a laundry list of ways it came up short. So I started dreaming up a “v2.0”; one that would tick all of my boxes… or at least most of them. And in this regard, Mountain Man was (and still is) an overwhelming success.

Here are the main specs:

  • Deck: Haero Bro
  • Battery: hand-built 16s8p with Molicel P45B cells + JBD smart BMS :duck:
  • ESCs: 2x MakerX D100s
  • Motors: 2x SKP (Reacher) 6365 205Kv (front) + 2x SKP (Reacher) 6385 205Kv (rear)
  • Gear Drives: 4x Apex Jump Drive 5.5:1 (83:15)
  • Trucks: Apex Air PKP
  • Wheels: MBS Rockstar Pro II XL
  • Bindings: MBS F5
  • Top Box: Pelican 1400
  • Ride Logger: Voyage Minnie
  • Remote: Z.Mote split trigger

Special Thanks

Thanks dude! It was a super fun build, and basically only came together with the help of this community. I see it as a collective win, also.

So happy to have been part of it! You blew this build out of the water, particularly since it’s your first DIY.

For anyone who isnt aware, Patrick here has been researching, learning, listening, and asking intelligent questions for over a year to arrive at this solid build with excellent parts. Really the model of what a good DIY’er should be. If everyone was like you, I’d be happy to spend hours helping their builds, like I was happy to help you

Patrick, please show off the EXTENSIVE notes you took over this process. I’m still impressed with what you put together. Basically an esk8 bible full of wisdom, notes, questions, links, processes, etc, focused around this build but probably useful and applicable to any similar build.

I’d also like to add what a pleasure it was to offer advice to Patrick over the course of this build. It was a delight to see just how well considered every minor detail of this build was.

I often thought he was completely overthinking the whole process, but the intense thought processes have led to a pretty great end result!

Excellent build, really put in the hard yards for a first build, well done sir!!

Honestly mind blowing that this is @patrickcleary first esk8 build. My first few builds were hot wet garbage compared to this beauty
