Monitoring the battery pack temperature with VESC, possible?

I’d like to keep an eye on the battery pack temperature, to make sure things stay reasonably cool, and catch problems before they turn into a shitstorm. I use sensorless motors which means the sensor port on the [VESC based] FSEsc 4.12 is up for grabs. I assume it would be fairly easy to put a temperature sensor in the middle of the battery pack, connect it to the GND and Temp pins of the JST-6 and read the spoofed “motor temp” in the app.
Just not sure what kind of thermistor I should buy to avoid a calibration or re-interpretation of values. Which one is used in a typical sensored motor?
Thanks!
