Hey all, been browsing the forums for a while now, and finally started working on my first DIY.
I wanted to set up an eMTB I can use for my daily 10mile, all season commute as well as hitting trails, jumps, etc.
Originally I was thinking of doing a bottom mount battery, because I am not a fan of the clunky top mount boxes, but for durability/waterproofing/ cost sake I think I am going to go with the smallest top mount I can manage. Any ideas for a compact battery setup that can get 15mi/25km range? I am currently leaning toward getting a 12s4p 21700 Molicel P42a pack built, and machining some sort of good looking enclosure for it once I know the dimensions, but it is hard without seeing what kind of configurations batteries can be built in. Any builders have any advice/ suggestions for where I should go with this? Thanks!
I’ve got a couple of lighter weight packs that I’ve made for EMTB. One is 12s4p p42a and the other is a 12s3p 30T pack. The 3p one is super cute.
But I just rotate them in the same peli1200 that I use for the 12s6p p42a Apex NGB pack.
This is where I stand… bigger motors means more amps requiring a bigger battery to make use of them. But I think depending on your weight you could get away with a 3p at 75 motor amps and 30 battery amps per side. My buddy rides my 12s 3p 40t, 5.6 boardnamics at, 8 inchers, and gets easy 10 miles at 180 lbs.
False, on launch and stop you can pull really high motor amps but low battery amps. It’s about power not current, power is torque * angular velocity so you can still have high torque and small battery but you lose the torque as you speed up
I decided to go with a 12s5p 21700 molicell p42a, which should give me pretty good long range. Because I am impatient while waiting for it to get built, and I wanted a small light pack for jumping/ripping around I also got 2x 6s 8000mah LiPos ran in series, just took the first test ride and it rips. Gotta get some battery monitoring wired up and get an idea of what range these packs will last, but even if its only a few miles for $160 the power is pretty wild.
