These have been available for awhile now and I would love to hear some feedback from you guys rocking these boards. My buddy is due for a new setup. You basically get 3 options from the website. We were kind of waiting for a fourth option without a battery or ESC, maybe motors excluded too so he could get some reachers but we don’t know enough about the drive system.
Not a huge rush, we have plenty of shit to ride in the meantime but some details on that gear drive and quick connect battery pack would be awesome.
A few of you were asking about individual components (gear drives, quick swap battery packs,…
All those parts are now in stock in the US, including connectors and cables for the battery and motors too expand the DIY options for these parts. Category link below… ELECTRIC PARTS — SHOP — MBS.COM
@SirVesa, the closest things we have to your “fourth option” are:
A basic “build-a-board” SKU where people can choose their wheels and battery option (including no battery at all) - MBS AGENT - BUILD A BOARD — MBS.COM
Alternatively, you could start with the base model MBS AGENT mountainboard (no electrics at all) then add whatever components you desire (Gear Drives, Motors, Battery, ESC,…)
If you guys have any questions that aren’t answered on the website let me know.
I do have one question, when ordering a gear drive the G1 drive couplers are not included and need to be ordered separately to have a working system. This is not a complaint. I’m just wondering if there are plans on the future to make couplers that will fit other popular non MBS hubs.
I see the two battery packs and the board mount for the quick swap battery system, are the battery cases available without batteries? For those of us that want to avoid importing batteries to our country.
Really I just want that quick swap system you invented it’s super cool.
Yes, it was an attempt to plan ahead, thinking we don’t want people to have to buy a coupler for MBS hubs if not needed. Depending on demand, we could potentially offer adapters for other hubs at some point but not guaranteed. In the meantime people will just need to DIY them. If you need anything from us to help with that let me know.
Glad you like the quick swap. We definitely plan to offer the empty MBS quick-swap enclosure separately at some point (no cells / BMS). Timing will depend on when we do our next production run, and that’s tough to estimate at this point. Best case, later this year.
@SirVesa is correct. The build-a-board option without battery DOES include ESC.
The best option for people wanting the board without ESC/Remote is to buy the MBS AGENT mountainboard, adding whatever other electric components they want from there… Gear Drives, Motors, Battery,…
Currently the AGENT mountainboard (non-electric version) only comes in the EXPLORER version (big wheels), but we’ll offer an AIR version soon. We have all the stock, we just need to take some photos.
Or if you REALLY want to customize things, all the mountainboard components on the AGENT are sold separately (decks, trucks, wheels, bindings,…)
In summary, you should currently be able to get anything you want without getting something you don’t. If not, let me know.
No immediate plans for straight cut gears, but it’d be easy enough to do if there was demand for it.
Our helical steel drives are already pretty loud. I’m a little reluctant to want something even louder, but if there are undisputed advantages to straight cut I’d love to hear more.
Main benefit is you’re not having to handle thrust loading on your motor bearings, meaning you can get away with just a keyway and maybe a grub screw instead of needing more finicky or complicated solutions like thrust bearings, circlip grooves, retaining compound etc, as well as not wearing on your motor bearings as hard.
Depending on how your current gear drive handles those thrust loads, the change to straight cut could increase reliability.
AAAND motor pinions different shafts too! Like round 8mm w/ keyway that DIYers use the most. I understand MBS’s priority is parts that work for its ecosystem around MBS Agent, but with Boardnamics and Apex not offering gear drives anymore, there probably is a market, especially in the US.
Don’t skip on this. I wanted helicals for years. Then I rode them for a year and a half and they chewed up a circlip and broke the retaining compound twice. 2/3 times were after spills so no doubt the shock load is a huge factor but that’s a normal concern in this field, unfortunately.
Now I spill a fair amount…
Straight cuts have been significantly more reliable aside from material issues (delrin) like snapping gear tooth if you full throttle with wheels in the air and hit the ground stopped.
My experience
3 helical drives, 3 doses of nonstop issues
My custom straight cut jump drives have worked for as long as I’ve remembered to loctite my motor bolts (oops)
Other boards list a rating, don’t know if they got it tested or it’s BS, but it’s listed.
My Exway Atlas is IP55 rated, Acedeck lists IP65 for their NYX Z3.
