Lonestar Supersport: What are your experiences replacing dead "P" groups in a used battery?

Friend of mine recently picked up a used Lonestar Supersport for what seemed like a great price ~$1500 in seemingly good condition. My advice was to check the internals before purchase but that didn’t happen. Anyway, my continuous prying gets the board on my bench and whatta ya know, it has got a dead P group and another on the way.

Board was built July 2021 and has Samsung 50e cells.

What are your experiences with this type of repair? Obviously cell matching is a concern, but is it over inflated? What would you do here?

If you have made this type of repair before and have a lasting battery afterwards, I’d love to hear from you.

Nope, fresh pack. If the pack had less than 10 cycles and it was brand new (calendar wise) then maybe and it would need closer supervision until the end of its life. In this situation, its time for a new pack or you remove the questionable p groups and make it a 10 or 9s battery.

I agree. Definitely not worth the fire risk or continuous battery headaches.

Thought I’d ask before passing the news.

I guess it could be chopped down to 16S to ride out the rest of the season.

it kinda did fit some of lonestars niche tho.
less power in trade for more range. was a fine trade off for a lot of lonestar riders.

but yeah. screw 50e… more power more better.

Indeed. I thought Lacroix was using p42a’s around this time.

Suppose these are the options:

  • Chop to 16S, still lots of labor, still questionable cells and BMS
  • New 18s with P42a’s, P45b’s or P50b’s (500, 720, and 1000 USD respectively for the cells alone)

Board also has a Stormcore 100D, was this the OG version that was preferred?

I think they used them in he smaller battery pack boards. nazare, barrel.

He’s gonna be going the way of new P42a’s and I’ll be pulling batt making shit out of storage again. :expressionless:
