i dont have a source but i remember reading that li-ion prefer to be stored about about 30% capacity. this is why most new cells arrive at around 3.4V
I posted this a while ago, its for the NCR18650PD, not equal for all cells but should at least show the influence
Hey Ryan,
Big snow dump today. Putting my winter beater setup on my commuter board.
3.62v to 3.69v, at lower than 25 C temperature, is the best storage condition for lowest degradation, for Samsung 30Q cells. Sez Samsung.
this is some super interesting data. seems like they are suggesting that the lower the SoC (State of charge) the better and also the lower the storage temperature the better.
I have been concerned about leaving my boards out in the cold of my workshop over the winter but this data suggests it might actually be better than keeping them in the house.
Yeah, for storage cold is great, I don’t know if too much cold can cause problems, I guess not, you can park Tesla’s well bellow zero and don’t have to worry
What you can’t do is run a lot of current thought them in low temperatures until they have warmed, also, charging bellow zero is a no no (I can’t say how much bellow zero is the problem)
Would keeping them in freezing temps affect battery life?
As for voltage I think storing a new from factory 18650 at 3.4 volts is optimal. But after several cycles the 3.6 is probably better.
I only base this on logic from forum knowledge. Temperature wise I would say fridge temps.
I used to store lipos in the fridge over the winter. Now I just keep the ones I don’t use on the basement floor. It’s cool enough.
According to the 30Q datasheet https://www.nkon.nl/sk/k/30q-specs.pdf
best storage life is If the cell is kept as ex-factory status (40±5% SOC) and kept between -30~25℃ it should retain 90% capacity after 1.5 years.
Looks like its not recommended to store below -30, discharge below -20 and charge below 0.
This is gorgeous. Some night time reading.
NYC group rides all year long
Ride all season baby, rain, wind, snow, ice aint gonna stop me
Anyone in your house have glasses you can try and wear while you have that on?
Most of those end up directing the hot air into my glasses, blinding me. I need one that won’t do that
I use thumb remotes and I just cut off the thumb bit on the glove.

Cold weather?
As you were.
it’s going to be 80s here all week… in November… crazy…
Is it ok to leave a BMS connected to a battery during storage? Disconnecting from the anti spark is easy. Could even remove the balance wires JST plug from the BMS but the negative is usually soldered on. Is it ok to leave it all connected for months on end?

there you go. Anti-Fog.
First truly cold ride of the season. The TSG pass started to fog up after a mile but I haven’t applied any treatment yet.
What are you rocking for gloves?
