Let's talk cold weather! How important is "storage voltage", cold weather riding gear and more ❄️

li-ion cells have a given nominal voltage, 30q has a nominal voltage of 3.6v, thats the best voltage for storage for that cell
the chemistry in the battery seeks to stay at that voltage, everything over or under that will degrade the battery, the further away from the nominal voltage the more impact it will have on the battery, but we are talking about years of lifespan for normal use anyway,
wanna use that battery for 20 years? never go over 3.9v and under 3.4v
li-po’s are a different story, they degrade much faster and cant really handle being stored over winter at full charge, have around 30 4s 1550 tattu’s gone bad because i forgot to storage charge, i think it has something to do with the lithium leaking from the batteries or something, when i opened the box it smelled really bad

I think i might actually do that  Even though i wear a shirt, pullover and a jacket,2 pants, 2 pairs of gloves and a balaclava, i still feel cold.

This makes sense. Thanks for the input

Only my hands get super cold. Try more shirts under there. Like 2 T-shirts then 2 long sleeve shirts then der pulli and the jacket

Latex gloves help alot. I used them while skiing, longboarding, and playing lacrosse in the cold

They keep the heat in while being wind resistant and dont restrict movement

I’ma have to try this. My hands feel like ice in the cold, but that’s about it. layering up in pads, thermals, shirt/sweats, hoodie/pants, goggles, head cover/helmet and maybe windbreaker if it’s really cold means I’m 95% comfortable going fast in the cold minus my hands and maybe my nose.

Half face mask also, keeps the face warm while still allowing the helmet to sit nice and confortable.

What is that statement based on? Why are 30Q shipped at ~3.4v then?

Buffs are great for this. Gonna have to break mine back out soon. Love it because it can stretch up all the way over your head . Also helps heep hair outta my eyes.

Derail over.

@BillGordon

Is it possible to move all the winter gear talk over to its own thread? I wanna know what ither people are doing.

No worries on the derail. All of this is kinda relevant to impending cold weather anyways :snowflake:

Updated thread title to fit the banter. Feel free to continue talking about cold weather gear, tips and tricks too

I have a d140 bms on a 12s6p pack, should I worry about the bms discharging the pack for a month of storage? Starting cell storage voltage 3.7V for example.

Small distinction between 3.4 and 3.6 for shelf life times and shelf temperature. But the cost of charging every battery sold an extra .2v is probably not small.
Tldr; moneys

I’m not quite sure, must be the chemistry out of the factory, I think the factories don’t charge them at all

I’ve often wondered this before but never asked or investigated.

Exactly my thoughts :call_me_hand:

I have those sa fishing masks so you can ride in the early spring late summer and then they have fleece ones for winter time.

How is everyone keeping there hands warm while using a trigger remote? The only gloves I have that would keep my hands warm enough are too bulky to fit into the trigger.
