Lacroix Nazaré grip tape change / blacking out

Hi all,

I love my Nazaré but the choice of color on its deck is not really my cup of tea so to speak.
It’s ok but not too great.
I have removed the original griptape because it was coming off and I have put on dope grip in hexagon form which I enjoy.
I wanted to blacken the deck but also keep my hexes or a least put them back on.
What would be the best idea to go about that?
I don’t really want to grip it completely with black grip so was maybe thinking vinyl?
Car wrap?
Thanks

If you put a wrap with grip ontop it will get ruined, you could have the deck skinned and it will look great, or surface and stain/paint then seal it

Thanks!

Skinning meaning removing the top layer?

Skinning the deck with cloth and resin, a bit like how you wrap parts in carbon fiber or glass fiber.

Look at sender skates work, skinning with printed fabric is what he does

Remove the varnish, paint or skin, and revarnish to protect the wood.

Is there a layer of glass or anything else on the top of stock nazare decks?

I’m not sure. The board making is not anywhere close to my skillset. In any case, you’d have to do some sanding so if there is, I’d imagine it just means more sanding

from what I can see on the pictures, there seems to be a layer of carbon on the top, plus they say that the boards are 6 or 7 plys so I am thinking that there is fiber reinforcement inside, roadside and topside too.

In that case, I wouldn’t keep sanding to get rid of the layer, maybe just uniformly scratch the surface so the paint adheres better and paint than clear coat. @brown5tick probably knows more about this kind of stuff tho.

Hmm, hard to tell.
It looks and feels like the top layer is glass fiber and then there seems to be a protective layer of laquer of sorts.
It doesn’t feel like varnished wood, the top can sort of be dented with a fingernail if you know what I mean.
I don’t feel confident enough to get sanding on it but thanks anyway.

That’s very cool!
My painting skill level is about the same as my sanding abilities so I don’t think I’ll do that either.
Why would I ruin the Board with a sheet of foil?

There’s a layer of fibreglass over the graphics that are over the carbon fibre.

Edit: actually maybe there’s not fibreglass on top. There definitely is on the bottom though.

The top might just be a nice thick resin coat.

Seems like only way to black it out would be to paint or reskin over it, don’t you think?

Yea, it’d be dumb to try sand it off.

I’d like to be able to achieve this kind of finish one day, instead of those damn fish eyes I get on the surface. You however might be there already tho.

I don’t have the patience. Dunno how its done at scale, but the only way i can ever get to a finish like that is with lots of sanding

Hmm, I was thinking, what I could do is this:

Sand the top layer slightly, mix some epoxy with black pigments, apply and then either keep it smooth and attach the hexagons (which already are coming off slightly due to dust) or glass frit it.

Does anyone knwo what paint or laquer the topmost layer is?
Would epoxy bond to it?
I don’t think it already is epoxy because it is not at all scratch resistant, also, there’s a slightly yellow spot in the Lacroix logo already.

Your plan should be fine.

I think it’s a sort of PE top sheet that’s bonded to the deck.

Yes, just as long as you give it that good scuff with 180-240 grit first.
