Kompact KWELD setup

I’ve been working on a side project condensing the amount of space a traditional kweld setup takes.

Trying to make it happen by making a housing for the components that are able to be in a vertical enclosure once all tuned & all setup.

For now I’ve made a PSU stack with a through hole for a 110v switch.
that also has a throughole on the backside for the DC Power Leads.

bit of a Slower pace to this build because I cant do this kinda stuff all in one night anymore… but hoping that it turns out half decent!

airflow looks constrained going around that pcb.

:astonished: Good point. @fessyfoo

I guess really haven’t got there yet but maybe the fans intake air and exhaust blowing laterally over the capacitors.

Idk more brainstorming is needed on my part
I could create air channels that float down around the PCB…

I’m also thinking do I even need two fans? In that case which orientation the single fan should be facing? Should it be just exhausting air?

Whether the fans are intake, or exhaust, they need a certain amount of distance behind and in front of impeller, or the blades will stall, and it will barely move any air. I recommend checking each fan fed the intended voltage, physically moving them toward and away from restrictions ahead of and behind the flow, as its rpm and blade design have huge effects on how much air is moved and how much noise is made.

If one has to have restriction, have it in front of the fan, rather than behind.

Even moving the finger grills away from back side of fan by 8mm greatly improved airflow and reduces noise. Same is true in front of the fan, but to a lesser degree, in my experience.

Those dust filters attached to fan, pretty much make the fan useless, unless making noise is the objective.

Alternatively, are the fans really needed? Most kweld setups dont have/need any active cooling. (But if it’s for the cool factor, I’m here for it. Pun intended)

The best, easiest part is no part

I can’t speak about the kcap setup, but my only thermal issues with the kweld were the leads and probes

I’m personally unsure whether it’ll really get that hot.
I just wanted to make sure my cooling setup was way overkill if even needed. @glyphiks

And yeah this could be completely redundant @tuckjohn but it’s for that K O O L factorrrr

Ahaha if I can do without the fans for the time being just to get this thing running I likely will do without them… My pc needs new fans anyways.
