Iāve never had mud pluggers before, the profile looks very good. I thought about it at first because of the heavier weight, but I think itās worth it because of the better grip.
Ordered Phatlads as well because the Rockstar IIās seem so narrow, I was used to 60mm wide E-Toxx hubs. Also I can use 9" tires which is not possible with the Rockstar II. For comparison on the right side Rockstar II and on the left Fivestars.
The reason why I donāt use the Fivestars is that they are offset on both sides, the Phatlads only on the outside. So wider track width an no space problems with 9". Furthermore these Fivestars are completely wavy and warped after dyeing.
Today I got the wrong tubes from amazon for the second time, the vent shafts are bent 45 and not 90 degrees although all pictures show 90°. I tried it anyway and they fit the Phatlads, unlike normal hubs, lucky me!
I also wondered if the Trampa Gummies fit on the Phatlads, they donāt. Itās a real shame because it would be fun to use them on pump tracks or skate parks.
Then I had another idea, I had to enlarge the spokes of the Superstar hubs from 4.4mm to 6.4mm to make it fit. Well, electrical tape is my friend, I cut 10mm wide strips so that they fit back into the rims and fit the jump drive hub adapter like a glove.
Your rotors were fully battle hardened? I think that in this case the wrong epoxy or not heat resistant was used in your batch. Personally, Iāve always had problems with rotors and not with stators. Hopefully it stays that way, Iāll push the motors hard
at the very end of the magnets, the little buggers like to slide out into the motor face plate. your ones look the same as mine
i had 2 fail with loose magnets. apex sent a spare rotor they had knocking about which had much better battle hardening. but after my bearings exploded i changed out the motors.
I had so much work that I hardly had time to continue tinkering with the board. At least I was able to ride to work 2 times with my commuter which was a lot of fun. It feels like a new board with the gear drive and bigger wheels. It had 7", then 8" and now 9" tires which I like most.
I think that the drives will hold up very well, everything seems very stable, great!
I wanted to mount the gears on the motors. I was thrilled that I donāt have to glue them. Unfortunately, I noticed that they are quite loose on the shafts and turn back and forth a bit.
For the most part, I was able to fix this with kapton tape, on one motor directly on the shaft and on the other on the key only.
Especially the one gear doesnāt sit exactly in the middle anymore, but I think it should work that way. So all that was missing were the circlips⦠hmm damn whatās going on?
I wonāt use the gummies for normal riding on the road, but on a pump track they are certainly great because of the low rolling resistance. Ground clearance is a bit modest but who cares as long as there are no bigger pebbles on the track!
If you donāt use locitite that pinion is going to wiggle and feel like extra backlash in the system. I donāt think kapton tape is going to hold up to the forces placed on the pinion.
That worried me too, the distance between the gear and the washer is very very small. But then I realized that the two parts of the circlips that are standing away are also the same size as the washer. So if the washer becomes a problem, then the circlip alone would also be a problem.
But Iām quite worried about what happens if I bend the axles. And itās not a question of if Iām going to bend them, itās when thatās going to happen. Time will tell.
For now one gear has no more wiggle and the other just a little bit. I will watch it closely and after some time I will also open the drives and take a look at it, good point mate!
The reason I bought these motors was actually just because I donāt have to glue the gears. Also Iām not sure yet if the 6384 are not too heavy for my case, Iāll find out.
Iāve often glued gears and they have almost always become loose again or shifted due to heat. Thatās why I found the concept of not gluing so interesting.
Loctite 638 didānt work well for me because itās quite thick (up to 0.25mm gaps). 648 (up to 0.1mm gaps) is thinner and I had better experience with it.
the mechanical stresses on the moving parts will make that gear move a bit on the shaft and it will get slightly worse over time and then stop and yes it will feel like extra backlash in your hand but⦠so what? You will not notice this when you are riding the board at all and it will not exert any more stress or forces that would damage the drive. If you donāt want this you can glue them but it doesnāt bother me at all and I am still running my original set with no glue since we released these drives without issue.
Thereās no magic bullet - this is the best solution for if you donāt want to use glue, but you can use glue and eliminate the movement if you want.
Thanks for your input mate! Iām glad to hear that youāre still on the road with your first set and everything is holding up well without glue. Iām also pretty sure this drive is reliable and will never let me down.
Is there a possibility that I could buy the motor mounting plates separately? Itās not urgent, but I have to think about it more often, if I had these and additional spare motor gears, then I could switch motors within minutes. This would be super easy with the jump drive as easy as changing wheels. For example, I could switch to lightweight 6355 motors for jumping with glued gears and switch back to 6384 for riding. Just a motor detection in between and then itās on again, next level shit!
Itās unbelievable how fast time flies guys, after my crash and the associated break with the dirt machine , I have time again to continue working on this board.
I love these velcro strips to tie the cables down, much better than zip ties.
I cut and sanded custom made spacers for the phatlads out of a rigid plastic tube, every hub is a bit different, it took some time but now every hub has its own perfect fitting spacers.
Today I was with my bike in the dirt park again for the first time in a long time. Since I landed with my face last year, Iāve kind of had a mental block and donāt feel comfortable to jump with the bike. I canāt wait to see how it is to jump with the board after such a long break!
I cordially invite you to join the #NoMoreRattleGANG
Oh man I hate this disgusting rattling sound with every movement, with every landing, or when you throw the board on the ground.
Maybe Iām imagining it, but even when riding it feels better and more precise when all the wheels arenāt wobbling around all the time. Also, I think it makes the hubs and drivetrain last longer.
There are few things more satisfying than when wheels just sit perfectly and donāt move at all. Also, please keep in mind that Iām an early victim of Trampa Superstars!
