iWonder Discovery 120D Cloudwheel discussion

WTF bro?
I did order the D very soon after they got released. Only one color available back then.

Core is clear, spokes are thick, what else am I missing?
Edit: Looks like I don’t have the “Discovery” writing on the wheel, I guess due to early batch of them.

Safe(ish) or not?

He ordered this product long time ago

If this is the case, then you should have the right ones. Can you take better pictures or measure your spokes just for 100% clarity?

These guys bring up a point that I haven’t seen much on this thread. They talk about the wheel as a whole not being good due to the lack of contact patch among other things. They do not bring up the core issues as far as I can remember. So I would like it if some people who have ridden the cloud wheels for as they put it in the video “serious rides” to give their opinion on the wheel outside of the core issues.

If you follow @BluPenguin at all… he puts them constantly to the test… 30-40mph constantly… AFAIK he has no contact patch complaints

I’m not disagreeing with you, but these wheels are sort of like the MBS wheels, where as you ride them, they get better. As the central nubs get worn down, the contact patch and grip improves. I guess it really depends on what they’re used for. Really nice smooth asphalt isn’t really their best friend, you’d be better off with standard urethane for that. Gravel-y streeets, bad areas, minor dirt offroad, those I think are the best applications for these, and for that, the contact patch isn’t as big of a deal.

lol put too much power into them while they are brand new and they are not so safe to ride.

Alternatively you could just do a burnout until it wears off the middle treads like people did with the MBS

I haven’t had a chance to try out cloud wheels yet however I did order the ownboard bamboo with cloud wheels. And this is the only video I have found that says there is an issue other than the core with the cloud wheels and from what I have seen in reviews so far they seem like good wheels for mn’s shit streets. I just wanted to hear some other opinions. The video goes into more details about their issues with the level of saftey with the wheels that i feel are reasonablely argued. And without the personal experience with the wheels i cannot honestly say whether on not what they said were accurate or applicable to where I ride. And I think it is important to not that they were not just saying that the wheels were worse than other wheels but dangerous due to how slidey they are.

I don’t want to say sounds like user error but still. I haven’t ridden them, maybe they’re squirrely. I feel like having any kind of bumps at that speed would be annoying, minus pnummies ofc, but that’s a different story. MBS are harder than these too

I still want these cloudwheels to get fixed so I can buy a set for my revel kit lol

They should just make kegel core and be done with it.

Lol if you think a solid 3D printed core would hold up I have some ideas…

Idk lol we have 3D printed pnummie hubs, but how would you even put it into the wheel

Lathe out the flywheel hub to round or leave some bumps for locking, then press fit and glue the new core in.

I would be doing this with the non-discovery version

That sounds tempting, but I’d be scared if I didn’t have everything lined up PERFECTLY.

I also need to wait for some printer parts to come in before I can start printing nylon, etc, as I assume anything else wouldn’t be worth the risk.

Yeah I guess the 3D print would really be a test for a CNC aluminum hub or maybe solid plastic.
