I think we should be up for experiments. I say we install the plugin and see how it functions. If it doesn’t do well, we go back. Just like we did with the emoticon.
The best answer i can think to give you is another question. Why does it matter? There are dozens of posts that users dont interact with, and some written is such broken english its arguable if its English. My point being, it’s up to each user to decide whether they want to spend time and effort deciphering a post vs just staying away. As long as things like the Lounge don’t become multi-lingual messes, i think independent posts targeted at different audiences, be it language-based, location-based, or anything else.
In terms of Moderation, a heavy reliance of the Flag system would likely be used
There is a discourse plug-in which translates each post in the thread automatically
Seeing as how this is an English speaking forum primarily, I agree with your proposal but think only non English threads should have to begin with [LANGUAGE] and an English title for user friendliness while still not shutting new members out.
¡Que guay!
i think that makes perfect sense!
Plug-ins aren’t always the easy solution they appear to be, because many are poorly coded and cause UI problems.
I seem to remember something about you and a plug-in fairly recently…
Thats a fair point, I did check that the plug-in had involvement from multiple developers and recent activity, it met those two points.
Given what it does I’d imagine their was some serious interest in it working successfully from multiple sites.
It’s an official plug-in, it only gives you a translate option if your locale is not the same as the locale the post was made from or something like that.
I know there are some people who just can’t stomach non-English posts, I quite like @Zach’s idea of tagging(all regular members can edit the title) + if the post is in I.e. Portuguese then the title is leaky to be as well…easy to spot
As before with the emoticons, It’s Damon’s call to decide whether to try another plug-in. Might be the exception to what we experienced with the other plug-in, so could be worth a shot.
I’ll step back and let the other mods consider some of these ideas and share their thoughts. I do hope we come to a solution, though!
Me too! The more, the merrier!
and honestly, its a great excuse to practice spanish lmao
tu mamá habla español
IMO staying only in a common English language will let the acumulated know-how grow and stay easily achievable to everybody that really in need… If its divided into sub languages then that will make some of it become non achievable to the majority… (I know the translators etc but searching, reading… all become much harder…) Efficiency will be decreased…
IMO continuing to grow this current main tree will be much better than splitting it into many…
ay, en su sueños. En realidad ella se dice “No hablen española”, después de trabajar en una concina mexicana por 4 años
The forum already supports locales and multiple language characters. If anyone wanted to post in non-english they could already as a few have demonstrated here. I dont have a problem with the creation of new categories with specific language tags and having people post in that language under them.
My only concern is with moderation and the ability to find information.
This idea just needs a little more research.
At least you used the formal version
es dificil para mí
How about keeping it super duper simple. Make a new category for languages, start with Spanish, a single place for them to talk about local stuff, organise rides and discuss local topics. Its basically WhatsApp but more searchable and indexed.
Then pin a post in that category saying if you want your language represented please request x moderator. Add them as needed as not to clutter.
This way the english speaking members of those groups can participate as normal, introducing loads of fresh ideas to the forum like the picture thread and general knowledge.
Influx of members, one new topic and the rest is worked out along the way. Moderate by flags if it’s ever needed.
Doesn’t need to be over complicated I dont think.
It was actually me who encouraged spaniards to post on this forum and forget to create another esk8 mushroom on the internet
We are close to 100 members on a WhatsApp group and sometimes it’s just not enought for our needs, so we are looking for something/somewhere to spread out.
I’m not a fan of opening subforums based on languages but we just need a little place where we can discuss our local stuff in our language so everyone feels comfortable and join THE forum.
Of course builds and main topics will keep going in english at the current categories, that’s it.
