I mounted a Propel Ruckus Gear drive onto an Endeavor GT!

I’ve been riding the Endeavor gear drive since they came out and I love em’.
But I keep having to fix them.
The main output shaft only has 1 puny little key pin. It’s so small, just the torque from riding bumpy off-road keeps sheering the key pin. Because of this I’ve had a few gears chip teeth, from chunks of those Keys floating around in the oil.
I have to tear them down every 2 to 3 rides and change the Key pins.
Then flush out all the glitter and fill em with fresh oil.
So annoying!

So, on March 11th when I saw Propel’s new video on the Ruckus Gear Drive Installation, I just had to check em out. I went to the site and they happened to be on Pre-order sale for just $160, so I got a set…

I don’t even have a Ruckus! :stuck_out_tongue:

My thinking was; buy it now cuz it’s cheap and awesome, and hope I can make an adapter of some kind, for my Endeavor.

Well, after a few days of design and a few 3D printed iterations, I had a working prototype. It consisted of 2 parts, and the stock spindle has to be slightly modified to extend the axle. It also needed some extra hardware, but I already had that on hand. Anyway, once I was reasonably happy, I sent the parts off for machining.

I got them back today and OMG, they fit perfectly.
I had to reverse the motor wires, so they spun in the right direction.
And a slight different performance due to the different gear ratios.
Endeavor Gears: 5:33
Ruckus Gears: 4:21

I haven’t ridden it yet, but I’ll report back once I know how it rides.

All mounted up.

I just went for a quick ride 'round the block… and HOLY F#$%#@%^
These gear are sooo smooth, sooo much better than the actual Endeavor gears.

The response time is instant. There is zero gear slop.
With the stock Endeavor gears, there is enough slop in the gears and keys, that there is a noticeable lag between the motor turning and the wheel turning.
I can hold the motor and turn the wheel about 1" either forward or back before I start feeling the motor turn.

Anyway, that was just a short test ride to see if It all worked…
Im suuuuper happy with these so far. :skateboard:
Cant wait to give 'em the beans and see how they perform at speed and off road.

I just got back from a 6 mile ride, with mixed terrain; asphalt, gravel, smooth trail, rough trail, and a splash of off-roading.

And my previous assessment of “HOLY F#$%#@%^” was right! :face_holding_back_tears: :call_me_hand:t2:
These things are sooo nice, they are rock solid, they sound like a whiny supercharger and there is zero gear slop, so the throttle response is super tight.

But the best thing is, this is the first time since I’ve had gearboxes, that I didn’t have to service the gearbox after riding… Just dust off the board…
What a feeling…:face_holding_back_tears::pray:t2:

It’d be rad if Propel made a version of these gears but for the Endeavor.
Better yet, they could design a new Endeavor wheel bracket with a socket to fit the back of the Ruckus gearbox, add a slightly longer axle and BOOM done!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: :clap:t2:

Actually, yeah, just sell 1 set of gears that fit both Ruckus and Endeavor.
The Endeavor riders would just have to buy this new wheel bracket along with the Gears.

I wonder what the ROI would be on producing only 1 Gear set that fits most of their boards (the Ruckus gears), instead of 2 different ones. The Endeavor gears are more complex with a lot more moving parts. The Ruckus ones are much simpler and look like they’d be easier to produce and service, and they look more robust on the inside too.
Then, instead of the Endeavor gears, produce a smaller, cheaper/easier to make, Endeavor Wheel Bracket.

I dunno, i’m just babbling at this point.

Maybe Propel can replace the gear drive on the Endeavor with the one from the Ruckus and make it a stock option.

1:21 of mixed terrain riding. Nothing too crazy, this was the maiden ride. :skateboard: :call_me_hand:t2:
Everything performed really well. Nothing came loose or got bent, no squeaking, clicking or other weird noises…
Other than losing some torque and speed compared to the Endeavor gears, these just “feel” better, yunno!
It’s hard to explain in words, but you all know what I’m talking about.

Here’s a fun supercut of the maiden ride, with a 20’s swing beat. (for some reason)

A version without the annoying swig music.
