Put fabric around the stator (t shirt, cloth etc), bunched around the bottom, then close with your hand on the can and motor mount and nothing near the gap as slowly as you can, when it snaps down its caught by the cloth and takes no damage at which point you can pull the cloth out and let it snap down the last mm

Use your middle three fingers and palm to firmly grasp the stator and gently let it suck into the can being held with the other hand, slowly removing fingers at a time
