I’m almost set to start building a mountain board, but I’m a bit worried I may end up not liking
The why is that I’ve been ridding my Hummie deck with TB218 drop mounted on 6.5" Urban Threads, and to be honest there isn’t one time I got out to ride and didn’t think:
“I should put the Caguamas back”
I know they are completely different beasts, and the mountain board would be used primarily on dirt roads
I would like to hear what you guys think, unfortunately there isn’t anyone near me that I could try it first
What you didn’t like on the 6.5“ urban threads is the question?
I don’t like them so much as well, but I like my 8“ and how they ride.
Mtbs not for everyone the right thing.
What you worry about that you will not like it?
With it we maybe can give you better suggestions.
The flexy Trampa and kaly decks I’ve tried act like super suspension, it really dampens the bumps and irregularities in terrain. I don’t know what makes you want to put Thane back on every time you go out, but when I first started riding pnummies on my MTB I missed having the “road feel” of Thane until I rode a while and liked the cloudy ride. While I like the channel trucks I don’t really notice much difference from rkp other than they’re wider and chonkier.
Perhaps bindings or foot hooks on your hummie will make it feel better. What exactly don’t you like about your setup for off-road?
@Andy87 I think what makes me not like is the cloud feeling and being high from the ground, I think that with a mountainboard even with 8” tires I may end up lower than as it is
@Saturn_Corp I think it’s exactly that, missing the contact from the road, I rode thane all my life, if I go forward bindings will definitely be a thing
@Venom121212 that’s my plan for this weekend, I tried it a bit a few weeks back until I got a flat, was avoiding going off road until I got slime on the tires
I rode a lot this setup on dirt roads with Gummies and even with Caguamas, but there are some places that you obviously can’t go
Maybe you have somebody around you riding a mtb and willing to let you drive around the block?
I mean, that’s not your setup, but could give you a direction.
Unfortunately the nearest guy with one is eboosted, and is a few thousand kilometers
That’s the problem, it will be a significant investment to get all parts here, and hard to sell if I don’t like with crazy expensive shipping for anyone wanting to buy
The angle and shape of mtb decks make for a VERY different ride. Normal skate trucks and decks use your feet and legs so much to turn. Mtb set ups you use your rear leg almost like a rudder of a boat and turn with your body mostly. My mtb and hummie/bergmeister build are so different that every time I switch between them, it takes a minute to adjust.
That’s exactly what I wanted to know, I think I will like
Lets say that with smaller wheel and closer to the ground I fell that the board and I is one, higher and pneumatics is like I’m on top of the board trying to balance
I like the aggressive driving that I can get on a mtb, jumping all the obstacles of the city, without worry about cracks, mud, etc…Binding riding with heel straps…I have a strong snowboarding background, so I feel secure…I can’t imagine my self commuting around my city with urethanes…Actually I might put some 9" in the future, slick cut…Thats the way I feel, happy to grab my board to do whatever I have to do…
This is the essence of riding these boards. The fun factor of jumping over stuff, not caring where you ride and not having to scan the roads for cracks etc is fantastic. I was also worries I would miss the skating feeling with MTB but I do not, now when I head out I choose the MTB over the icarus
if you want a lower ride, make sure to get the holypro/hs11. dont get the carvers. they ride higher.
Look, i get the lust for thane. Lets be honest, all of us wish we had smooth roads around us and be able to ride 73mm sticky wheels. but i have to travel the best part of 4 kms to get a 500 metre smooth road that is worthy of thane
Agreed with @santino and @Lee_Wright. The fact that they’re making 110 mm urethane wheels and getting higher tells you something. Pneumatics are at 150 mm (not much bigger) and infinitely more comfortable.
I still get a great carvey ride on my hummie surfrodz build which is perfect for city group rides where small paths and sidewalks might be hit.
My mtb just pummels everything in its path. Sometimes I just act drunk and veer off the side of a road into a grass field just to watch people confused. If there’s an asshole on the road, I just go around them with no worry. Plus I can drive in the woods which is next level fun.
I don’t like how channel trucks feel (nazare trucks might change this???)
I don’t like cambered decks. Give me a flat or rockered deck instead.
I hate 0 to minimal concave (kaly 2.0, thanks for adding concave but camber still sucks imo, though I know it makes sense for mountain boards and jumping)
I hate being strapped in. Freebord or yobis might change this but I’d rather be able to walk all over the board at any time, never even used footstops because they get in the way.
Pneumatics are great, and I love them on standard eboards that can accommodate them. I prefer urethane 100%, but killing it off-road with your normally urethane speedboard with pneumatics just feels amazing, but the drop in efficiency sucks.
Maybe I just need more time with a mountainboard to know for sure if I really hate them. The concept is super cool, but every time I’ve tried one I just can’t see myself ever feeling it. I’ve considered building one as well, but I just can’t take that next step.
Maybe if someone made a mountainboard deck with flat or rocker and concave, and i didn’t add bindings I’d like it. Wait, this is basically the nazare… I really think I’d like the nazare (with split angles too??? )
At first, I felt the same way you did when I was going from 97mm flywheels to 7" pneumatic. I agree it doesn’t feel as much like a skateboard anymore when you go from urethane to pneumatic.
BUT, it’s a whole different beast when you are on air filled tires. I can do so many things on my pneumatics that I simply cannot do on traditional wheels. I can go faster, hit bad roads and terrain harder without having to worry. The traction is so much better.
I really grew a love for air filled tires when I started commuting on the esk8. It just gives you so much more flexibility.
Downsides are more weight, half the range, bigger and therefore more difficult to store, less free roll and ofcourse the beloved flat tire scenario.
Ok, first note to self, loose sand can suddenly get deep, the board will stop and you will go flying
I had such a blast today, and I’m in love in what these pneumatics wheels can do, do I want to go ride with them near my house that have near perfect rodas? hell no, but on the rest I’m going mountain board
The thing is, the city here is smallish and I’ve rode everywhere to the point it’s not that fun anymore, but we have miles and miles of crops all around between cities that are unexplored territory on a board (rode a lot of them in my bike), and even the 6.5" wheels did great, I never had have the courage to try to go in them even in Gummies, lots of loose sand pockets that the board would simply stall
To be fair the 6.5" is not perfect for that, it’s like the middle ground where it isn’t really good on roads and not enough on the cracked dirt, but the plan was always to go 8" tires anyway
If I really want to explore all I will need 4 wheel drive, I have a design that would use just a small motor for both front wheels and have no drag when switched off, but that is for the future
Unfortunately the eBoard scene is really weak here in Brazil, mountain boards even weaker, I have a friend that bought a Trampa but it’s months away from being ready, and also lives quite far from me
Nice, that’s what I want, how do you feel by using bindings on Traffic and in general? For example the deep sand dive today, I fell like if I was strapped to the board I would actually have hurt myself
This was a really nice bonus, at the end of today ride I was way less concerned in looking at the road right in front of me than when riding thanes
Your videos, and many others from here, was a big inspiration for going forward with it, keep it up
That’s for sure, I remember eBoosted talking a lot of the height diference of both
Small wheels are the best road feel, but today I’ve leaned that if you ride in bad roads in pneumatics the feelings gets similar as a thane in good roads, so win win
That’s true, I can even keep everything and run Gummies since I have them already
I’m not in that level yet, but after riding for 3 hours non stop my confidence in them is way higher, of that it was actually 2.5 hours on dirt and the last half on asphalt, good and bad, and I was gliding at full speed without worrying in a local country road to take me home ()
I share your concern in some of your points, but now I fell that building it is more as a mean to get to some isolated places than the riding experience itself
And my first board I made the deck from a piece of ply wood and glued some wood sandpaper I had, completely flat, it worked
One important thing that my brain hasn’t processed yet is that I have more grip on them than on thane
And about the range, I don’t get how people get so bad consumption on pneumatics, maybe the 6.5" is an exception, but the consumption riding on dirt, with lots of loose sand is the same I get on my 85mm Caguamas, around 10 Wh/km, of course the average speed is lower on this ride than most of my street rides, but I would not go faster on the trails, it’s more than getting there quick
Well Buenos Aires is a beautiful and fucked up city, and I feel pretty confident with bindings around traffic. I usually go to Uruguay on vacation, lots of loose sand and shity streets, I just use 15 to 30 PSI and ride with a little hand inflator, the difference it is huge. I really like using low kv high torque motors and high wheels, crazy torque and speed. If you crash, well, you are going to be in pain…so I would probably use all the gear to protect my self…I have two boards, one for mainly off roading, and I use knee, elbows, helmet; my hybrid is a urban carver, and I use TSG pass helmet and a street bike hoodie with protectors and kevlar… When I ride for fun within the city I usually wear all of my protectors, but to commute just helmet and hoodie…Have patience to be confidente before going full throttle, as o said before, crashing with bindings it is serious…And heal straps are a must for me…Also, I would by 9" wheels for sure under your conditions…um abraço
Today I went back to Caguamas in preparation for a group ride we will make on Sunday
Completely different beast, for street way more fun, and with both wheels geared for the same speed, the street wheels absolutely destroy the 6.5”s for the same motor current, that’s was expected since they have way more inertia, now I get how people go for big motors when my 6355’s if I max them out it’s too much torque
