Herringbone Gears Avio MK2 Gear Drive

This is around 20mm.

Ill need to measure this, but i dont think there’s much space here.

One of my 6374 motors had this same issue. I noticed before powering the motor that it turned with much greater magnetic resistance when one of the bolts was fully tightened. It was probably the last two turns of the bolt where the effect began.

Replaced the supplied 10mm bolt with an 8mm to resolve.

The other motor seems fine with 10mm bolts.

I haven’t tested continuity.

Interesting! That sounds slightly different than my issue, but same cause. It sounds as though your bolt was shorting between two of the motor phases. On mine it seems like it was only one phase per motor, because they ran totally fine individually, only when current was going to both did it cause a problem.

Were you using the same open can Haggyboard motors sold as an add on to this kit? Or another brand?

Yes, same Haggyboard motors sold with the kit.

I didn’t think of that but the bolt shorting across phases makes perfect sense.

This all obviously happened very recently, but I let Timo know and I’m sure he’ll investigate and make any adjustments needed. Also should mention everyone is really setting a high bar for customer service.

I just swapped out all the m4 10mm motor bolts for m4 8mm and am again impressed with the quality of the drives and the ease with which they assemble. I have about 150 miles on the motors and they seem fine.

Awesome! I really just wanted to make people aware of the problem. With my ground down bolts I have not had any issues yet, so I hope I dont end up needing to put Timo’s legendary customer service to the test :slightly_smiling_face:

Perhaps it would be prudent for @Avx and @Haggyboard.Timo to do this for all the kits sold going forwards, just to be safe?

Same :slightly_smiling_face: I love this kit. I have only but a dozen miles or so on it, but it’s beautiful and rides like a dream! Everything is designed so simply and intelligently. A+

Coming from a pre-built, this is my first DIY and I’m really blown away by how well it rides and how well it all went together!

This is pretty much the ideal build. It’ll be hard to find something that rides better.

Bolt I did not shorten:

Bolt that I did shorten:

It is pretty close to flush. If anything it may be a little bit in-set.

Is there a chance to fit the gdrive on another trucks, such as (random example ) SR TKP? Should be possible with an adapter for the mount?

With an adapter and a lathe, anything is possible. I’m in the works of adapting this drive onto a trampa truck for fun. Haha.

I never liked SRs and their shoulder bolts though, so I never sought to design a drive for those trucks.

Wot i thought this was a secret between us :broken_heart:

Well, our lil experiment worked.

Now you guys can bug Jeff to make adapters to fit other trucks

Can you help me understand why people here like surfrodz so much?

Me too… I love those Kahuas.

They are cheapish (within the US) good looking precision trucks in many sizes. Pretty much an all rounder for any board. Within the EU though colours and size are super limited unfortunately. Tkp are practically impossible to find. (Though most people use rkp)

If Trampa trucks work I that’s great but imho if you are using Trampa trucks you are going off road mtb-ing 80% of the time. I would use other drives for mtb, these are more for high speed/ AT boards just because they are quiet (good for city’s where you don’t want attention) and because they are great looking and I wouldn’t want rocks smashing them up (not that other drives aren’t beautiful)

I would focus making clamps for SR RKP and caliber/tb 220m trucks.

I have 2 problems with this statement…

  1. They aren’t THAT cheap, are they?
  2. They are not exactly precision. They have rather horrible tolerances.

And…

  1. They use shitty COTS shoulder bolts that rust over time.

They do look really cool though…

cheapish precision trucks (compared to other brands that jump straight to $300/400). If you want smaller then 220mm it’s hard to find (SF and BN really). if going for 220mm or bigger i’d def go either for TB, BN or 3dsas

Really? i’m unaware of that :open_mouth:
@Sender has them on all his builds practically. Doesn’t @Linny have some rkp/tkp?

They are $159 for a full set, the same as TB’s CNCed trucks. TB trucks even come with riptide bushings/pivot cups and real axles…

I really don’t see why they are considered cheap…

I bought a bunch before, the red ones from the sale and several pieces from forum members… measured them all and came up with vastly different dimensions. Not to mention, the new ones I got from the sale had dents and scratches…
