does the motor pinion have angular contact bearings protecting the motor from axial forces?

Yep, it has a small angular contact bearing for the motor shaft.

As was reminded, what is a weight of this gear drive? I like this robust design, but what is not clear for me is that you have doubled contact between gears but thickness of gears are 20mm as Iam understand correctly. Why You do not reduce it to save weight and place for motors?
