GPS Tracker - What to buy? What works? Who Where & When! [SERIOUS]

Looks to me like there are always 3 hashtags at the very end, and if username and password are blank, then that leaves you with 5

Just thought I’d share an update for anyone looking for a board tracking gps system. I went with the Tractive dog tracker which I bought during Prime days on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Tractive-LTE-GPS-Dog-Tracker/dp/B08M6H284G/

There is a monthly/yearly fee associated and if anyone tries this route I recommend signing up for one month to test as apparently the subscription is nonrefundable. Obviously, paying for a full year or two reduces the cost but definitely test with a month first. It is supposedly works in over 150 countries (including Australia) and has a built in battery with pretty decent life.

I was worried about the signal strength so I popped it open, wired it to a buck converter and threw it on my unfinished build. For reference, the deck is a Powell flight deck, so has carbon fiber layers and my enclosure has two layers of carbon fiber as well. The board is currently indoors (concrete block) and is surrounded by at least 8 wifi networks (so a good amount of noise). Last charge was 4 days ago.

I’ll definitely be changing my month subscription to a full year. It works good thus far and less than $80 a year for something I don’t want to add up the cost on seems like a good investment.

deff give it to a friend, tell him to take it somehwere, then check the app to see if where it says it’s located is actually accurate by calling your friend
this way you’ll know if when it’s stolen, and the thief takes it to his/her house, when you go tocking on their door it isn’t the neighbours haha

Testing update… I’m sold on the Tractive after finding it in a 5 story building on campus (friend hid it for me). It gets me really close with the gps and then I can click into this mode that gets me within a couple feet.

Turning the tracker light on is obviously useless with it buried in the enclosure, but the sound is an annoying high pitch tone thats sure to make any dog nearby start barking.

I would like to get some advice/feedback on a device I’ve been eyeing.

Shameless Plug: I work for T-Mobile and get a hefty discount.

We are selling this tracker that uses cellular connection which I find to be a huge plus so you’re not just reliant on Bluetooth to find a stolen board. The down side is that you would need to keep it charged and I want to put it inside the enclosure. Would it be hard to wire a USB connection off the battery to keep it charged and maybe add a switch to cut the power so it doesn’t drain the battery?

I haven’t purchased this device myself yet, but I’m fairly certain it draws a low amount of power. Any opinions on a tracker like this and the practicality of implementing? Any alternatives that also use cellular to ensure you can always track the board even when not in range?

I’ve done what you’re talking about with a Tractive dog tracker so I know its possible with a buck converter hooked to the battery. Only problem is when it rains a week straight and the gps battery dies because you haven’t powered on your board (fingers crossed it auto powers back on)

Well, all 3 of my @BuildKitBoards trackers stopped working. I believe all of the 2G networks near me have been shut down because the 5G networks just came online for T-mobile near me.

Have there been any good trackers like the BKB one that anyone has found? My biggest hurdle is fitting it in my enclosure so I can’t really use the large dog trackers.

someone did a test of sending it around the world and it tracked pretty good.

2G almost never shows up on your phone. usually goes down to E and that’s it. But it still exists.

Thats what I have read.
It has to be somthing with the signal for all 3 to stop working at the same time.

I have this one which from my experience has a really crappy connection and slightly inaccurate location (20 meters probably if not more). The app is totally fine though, but the connection really just sucks.

That said, I think it’s due to the 2G network, which is why I’m strongly considering upgrading to the 4G version.

It’s 70 bucks though… To be fair, in case it works perfect, is honestly probably a pretty good price compared to other options.

In case it’s possible for you, try to set your network on your phone to 2G. I know a gps tracker doesn’t require crazy good internet, but it’s pretty obvious that 2G is crap.

Here is my 2G test vs 4G

edit: Seeing @PixelatedPolyeurthan reply, it’s probably not even 2G, but E which I suppose is better?!? Then imagine 2G geeezz…
