Forget the grip use Glass Frit

I asked for fine but ended up with medium frit somehow

It is quite sharp and I don’t enjoy it barefoot. I’ve sanded down some of the extra sharp bits and it’s OK now.

Fine or Uber fine is my recommendation.

I do three coats on top of the frit with a bristle brush.

you don’t want to use oil based, it makes cleanup difficult, doesn’t cure as fast or as clear, and yellows with age.

Lowe’s is where i get mine. If you can’t find it on the stain and varnish aisle, dig around some more. It could be hiding on the shelf behind a pole, that’s where it is located in the store i go to all the time.

That must be a common thing. There is a huge support beam in my lowes’ finishing section as well.

exactly. Its an annoyingly large pole supporting the ceiling and there’s a phone on it and some impulse items hanging from it too. And right behind it is the gloss and satin water based minwax pro series spar urethane.

I think they tend to put the common stuff that works for most peoples needs where people can find it. The performance grade or contractor grade is sometimes hidden. I had to search all around the store for a rust remover. Ended up being close to the front of the store where they had some random hand tools.

All this glass frit looks pretty aggro for my taste.

Anybody tried Tread Tex?
Its a coarser quartz sand.

My dichroic frit just arrived!
How long does this process take to dry?
Say 3 base coats, frit, 2-3 more top coats?

Does the frit last ā€œforeverā€?

That’s what the fritz industry want you to believe.

Years ago tread tex was what people used instead of glass frit. Guys on silverfish forum used it a lot as it was easier to get ahold of before the days of prime.

Yeah, I’ve been using it since the silverfish days.
I still really like tread tex, in fact I still have half a bucket of it.

I suppose I should have phrased that better.

I’m curious what people thought who have used tread tex think about it vs glass frit, why it seems to have lost favor?

I’d kinda assumed since the this thread started that people here were more favorable towards frit because its being put on beast machines that really benefit from aggressive lock down.

How long should I wait between coats with the minwax pro series spar urethane?

I think it usually dries in 3 or 4 hours. It should say on the can. What I do is if I do a count in the morning I wait till that night to sand and do another coat.

@Briman is there a reason you sand in between coats?

You have to sand between coats so the spar urethane has something to grab on to. It should say it on the directions on the car to sand with 220 grit between coats.
