First Build - Questions RE: Flipsky & Mboards!

Greetings all!

Long-time stalker of this forum. Finally, after years of contemplating, and dreaming about it, I pulled the trigger and have ordered 95% of the parts for my first DIY build.

I have extensive experience programming and building things*, but this would be my first esk8.

*Robotics, R/C, Arduino/Raspberry Pi projects, Giant Repunzel Tower in the backyard for my daughters, etc…

Before I go into the details of my build, I have some concerns about some of the vendors that I ordered from and am looking for some advice:

#1 - Flipsky - Battled Hardened Motors

So I know the company isn’t perfect, but what has your ordering experience been like?

I ordered parts on October 3rd, and as of today (Oct-8th), the order still says “ordered”.

I emailed them twice asking for an ETA and haven’t received a response yet.

#2 - Mboards - Unity and VX1

I’ve definitely seen some pretty severe negative comments about this company and the guy that runs it. I would have ordered from BKB, but they have been out of stock for a while. Kicking myself for not ordering a Stormcore at this point. Haven’t opened the box yet, but I’m assuming based on everyone’s experience that they suck at returns!?

If I can return it, should I? Would a Stormcore be more reliable over the long-haul vs the Focbox Unity from Mboards?

Are there known defects with the Mboard Unity?

#3 - ElectricBoardSolutions

I love this guy!!!
Just had to put this in here, super responsive, high quality parts and service!

That is all for now, more to come on the full build details later.

@EboardSolutions

I have to agree. Frederick must be the most reliable vendor I have ordered from in the past 2 years.
Without him I wouldn’t have been able to ride for months because of slow shipping.
His china belts suck though, will give 10/10 when he changes to Gates belts.

Ga zo door Fred!

Curious, regarding the belts, does this also include his 20mm belts?

When I ordered my Flipsky motors off AliExpress, there weren’t any shipping updates whatsoever. They did show up on my doorstep 12 days later via DHL, so they’re probably somewhere.

Thank you sir!

I do know Flipsky is a Chinese company, and they had a Chinese holiday from Oct 1st - Oct 7th. Maybe they’ll respond soon?!

As long as you begin the return process from the delivery date within 14 days you should have no problems returning. (Product is still intact or considered new).

MBoards doesn’t own Focbox, is just a reseller. Same quality as the other ones.

Me personally I really WANT a stormcore but currently don’t have a need for it. The focbox’s are a really great option and are pretty durable, but me personally I’d go with a stormcore (even though i haven’t had any experience with them. Im just fan boy’ing over the look and isn’t listed on MBoards for sale keeping it non biased on who’s selling) I do know a lot of the stormcores are back ordered for a while, so there could be a project delay for your build waiting on a stormcore.

DISCLAIMER
I work for MBoards, handling ALL their media needs. But I’m just a camera guy so what do I know about Esk8 :upside_down_face:

Thank you for disclosing that! :+1:

I can’t speak for MBoards customer service. Maybe it has improved since a few years back. Maybe it hasn’t. Time will tell.

About the Unity though – its power button may or may not fail for you over time. And it has some minor quirks that might annoy you, like the voltage drop on shutdown that logging devices notice. And thermal pads not touching some of the mosfets. And other issues I’ve forgotten because I personally am over it and don’t recommend it nor use one myself.

Stormcore 60D+ can handle more current, and runs much cooler. Has better sensorless / low RPM estimation, and is V6 hardware which is cool. Has A++ customer service, an RGB power button + antispark that doesn’t fail, and is in general a very reliable ESC. Costs more though.

If I were you and I had the money I’d return the Unity. Or trust the 100s of people running Unities and just know you might need to use a loop-key or dedicated antispark if the button fails. Up to you.
