Lipos in discussion there and moreso spares carrying rather than in-use. I’m not clear if a blanket would keep a li-ion fire runaway contained and also increase their temperature in-use.
Tending towards probably due heat increase and no for fire containment. Being able to jettison a burning pack would probably be a better route but would require multiple enclosures
Fire blanket will not take out the fire, it will only retard it a little bit, maybe enough for you to get some water but no more than 30 sec / a minute more

Not had the misfortune of a fire otherwise the motivation would be higher.
I like fart-arsing ideas for practical solutions to practical problems, fire blanket with the battery sealed into it and an external mini extinguisher mounted top deck with the release pipe vented into the pack.
Some say you can’t actually extinguish a li-ion/lipo fire but not sure if definitive proof exists
I did through a fire blanket over a burning pack and it didn’t burn through it. There was an enclosure as well inbetween which probably held back the full force of the flames, so I can’t say how it would hold up if the flames would be exposed to the blanket directly.
I think main thing we should look for is to build packs which solid and can handle a crash or impact so that it doesn’t come to a fire at all.
I know that probably nobody will do it, but a good thing would be as well to have a fire resistant place to charge up the board, or just do that outside. As soon as a fire happens outside the best thing is just to let it burn out. It’s never bad to carry a fire blanket with you as it will hold the flames in a smaller radius. If I wouldn’t have used a fire blanket in my case i‘m sure the walls of our flat would have needed a full rebuilding.

We use a similar system on our trains in electronic container. There are nitrogen bottles attached outside with a pipe running through the container. As soon as a fire occurs the pipe melt and release the nitrogen which put out the fire.

I charge my board in my room, there a window that opens to the gap between houses (neighbor’s wall is solid brick and no windows)…if it starts hissing, I’m gonna try yeeting the whole thing out the window and pray the carpet isn’t already on fire. Not quite ‘fire safe’ but it helps me sleep

Interested in @bourbon_norm’s thoughts on the ability to snuffle a li-ion fire out, maybe something removing oxygen. We’re not even sure if the right type of extinguisher to use
In the Formula E cars the batteries are surrounded by some carbon material that changes chemical state when its subjected to too much heat making a sort of sarcophagus for the battery. I will try and find out what material it is made from.

Sorry I don’t know anything about fires. We don’t plan on putting out fires. Our stuff operates in a vacuum if it doesn’t blow up on the launchpad.
Edit: The Extover that someone linked earlier looks like the right stuff to me.

We ride some wood with plastic that uses a battery that can burn your house down. The goal isn’t to save the skateboard. That isn’t going to happen if your battery ignites. The engineering thought here is to save someone’s house.

I just spent an hour trying to order some Extover. I went to the company site and followed the links to probably 10 of their distributors. Either dead website, not translating to English, or not shipping to the U.S.
I did a little research on what the airplane industry is doing. Next to nada. FedEx has put custom systems on 60 aircraft from a company called Ventura Aerospace, Inc. Maybe a neighbor of mine but I never heard of them before. Their website is less than forthcoming about the system but apparently it uses a foam based on argon. Argon is a noble gas - very inert and relatively common.

Now I am intrigued. I have requested a sample of Extover from the company. There are plenty of deserted beaches nearby where I could test this in a makeshift enclosure. The only question is which Chinese board should I burn…?

Argon is used for welding, very common and ‘gettable’. If you need to weld stainless you get an argon mix, titanium requires pure argon delivered into a cup around the welding tip.
Interested to know how this gets on. Maybe you can productise something!

Maybe I could productise something for esk8 and give the product to the community. I get the feeling esk8ers are like surfers, pitching in their change to buy a six pack. Once proven, I’ll rape the airlines for systems. Sell a few. Generate a little publicity around the risk and how few aircraft are protected. Dramatic video on the evening news of raging li ion fires.
Do people still say cha-ching?
Edit: if the six pack comment offended anyone please understand that I have been a surfer for close to 40 years and now I esk8 also. If you have ever gone out for a Hawaiian breakfast after a morning session because rice and Spam is cheap you know what I am talking about.

You miss the point. Wether you recognise it or not we are at the forefront of innovation of PEV. Why stifle innovation because it’s just some wood? We have many things to learn, mark my words.

That is a grand idea.
There is literally no other area so ripe for the plucking right now. Argon is a perfect accompaniment, you can even breathe some no problem. Without oxygen there is no combustion, flooding the hold oops I mean enclosure is definitely an angle into your system.
Plus I want a beer off this notional six-pack when you’re rich and fabulous 
I’ve look up the test of their product on YT, it’s not very good, they need 2 fulls bags (10kg per bag ?) to dampen the effect of one lipo on fire, and the thing is burning inside
