Ok, cool, thanks guys
Does the thread name need to be changed to the Stooge Croix - 4WD atrocity?
Kinda?
it’s still got 4wd apex jump drives on it
Maybe just rally Croix like @Yeahthatperson
Also… build update - it fits 9” tires with some deck modding
End of year build update.
I’ve been bitching forever about jump drives needing straight cut gears. Eventually @Evwan agreed and made it happen with some help also from @poastoast and Mr boardy dynamics @Boardnamics
These gears are a drop in replacement. Circle clip install for a gear drive pinion is amazing.
Getting the old gears off proved to be a pain in the duck. Apparently stainless is made out of Swiss cheese and rounds out easily. Yes I heated it up to loosen the loctite. No, it didn’t help. It also drills out easy, but these helical gears are now basically useless. I’m not sure I could ever get these bolt nubs out, so there’s no going back to helicals now.
My backlash is set very loose because the apex air adapter is touching the motor can. It can’t be brought any closer, unless I reclock the stooge gear drive adapter, which would be a metric tuck ton of work. I’m ok living with slightly loose backlash.
Aaaand I got a set of Xcell RS tires because I want the board ready for racing at esk8con. Unfortunately the 9” tires are a little too big and I end up with footbite. The other tires I’d be tempted to try are the Newbee 8” off-road tires, but I’d need yet another set of hubs and apex adapters to make that happen, so not gonna happen for a while, if ever.
I still think you should grind a mm off the adaptors to set your mesh properly… what happens when your loose backlash destroys your unobtainium gear set?
Destroying unobtanium seems to be the theme of this build
I’m likely grind/reclock adapters in the future but I don’t have the patience for it now.
Just gonna enjoy this build for a bit
Fair call, play on
There’s nothing more permanent than a temporary solution
I can feel my mind warming to the idea of re-clocking the stooge GD adapter 45 degrees so that I have 1mm more backlash adjust… and I hate all of you for that
I took a quick spin around the block and confirmed that this thing is going to be a weapon on the track. It has terrifying amounts of acceleration on the smaller Xcell RS wheels.
@tuckjohn thinking I should rename this to “Something Fancy”
Sound up for the straight cut GRRRRR
You’ve got a sick board, certainly worthy of a namesake in lineage of Nothing Fancy😁 I support it, @ShutterShock’s board is named something simple
though where the dualities at🙊
Believe me, I’ve considered it. But to tell the truth I really like the stooge 3 links. They do exactly what I want for this board, and I generally prefer narrower axles where possible.
It will be interesting to compare nothing fancy to this board the next time we cross paths. Maybe esk8con
Oh yes, definitely, let’s
I had a go at re-clocking the @MoeStooge gear drive adapters today and it was more straightforward than I expected it to be.
I hit it with a heat gun for about a minute and then pulled like hell on the wrenches until the adapter came loose.
With the gear drive adapter shifted 44deg, I can now run the apex adapter square with the jump drive. This provides 1mm more adjustment range to pull the pinion closer to the wheel gear.
I also took the opportunity to back the gear drive adapter out 1cm, so that the jump drive adapter fully seats on it now.
1 gear drive fixed up, 3 to go.
Yep, the build that I did this year that never got a thread
It’s not too late Ryan
Drat lol now I have to come up with an excuse
I finished re-clocking the stooge adapters. It was a lot of work but I’m happy I did it.
At the same time I re-spaced the adapters on the axle, moving them all out about 1cm. This allows the jump drive adapter to fully seat on the stooge adapter, which it didn’t before. I’ve had the set screws wiggle loose in the past because of this, so I’m anticipating this fix will prevent that from happening again.
This is the adapter almost fully removed, ready for a healthy dose of red loctite and to be threaded into the correct clocking and spacing.
And here is what it was all about - getting tighter backlash. The gif is shitty quality and makes it look a bit tighter than it actually is.
Anyway that’s it. This board is done for a while. It’s riding real good and there’s not really anything nagging at the back of my mind, as there frequently has been in past revisions of this board
Super low ride height, flexy Croix deck, 4wd, 3-links, 20s, and STRAIGHT CUTS go brrrrrr
With the 5.1 gear drives and Xcell RS wheels, this board has a ludicrous amount of force
How noticeable is the extra weight in the front?
Carves nice and responsive?
Can’t decide between 2wd and 4wd for next build
